Re: JD450 H-L-R transmission filters

Hi Larry,

Try working a small thin chisel between the cover and the case and it will come off. It is probably stuck on due to the gasket and sealant being old.

Re: 450C transmission fluid and filter change.

Hello, Yes, you are correct about the screen, filter and common sump. Clutch housings each have their own drain plugs and filler like the transmission (your operators manual provides details). You'll need a new gasket for the screen. Use good oil ( not "303") and some Seafoam if you are worried abou...

Re: Jd 350 boom cylinder disassembly

Hi, Tap the gland in a little with a wooden block and hammer to expose the snap ring (be careful not to damage threads on gland). Use a pick and remove the snap ring. Clean out the snap ring area with a wirebrush or scotch-rite pad real good so you don't damage the gland or piston when removing them...

Re: Welding on "side grousers" to prevent side slipping.

Hi,
Check these out:

https://montanatrackclaws.com/

Seems like a good idea and they're removable in the off season. Welding on grousers is not much fun.

Re: 450B shifting speed

Hi, Jim's right with the shift time. It shouldn't be a violent shift (pop you out of the seat) , nor should it be lazy (waiting for seconds for the transmission to engage). When adjusted correctly (following the procedure set forth in the manual) it should shift smooth yet firm. There is a thread fr...

Re: 450D Broken Bolts in Mounting Frame and Cross Bar

Hi, I've had experience with the cross-bar bracket bolts (2 on my machine were broken when purchased). My intact bolts came out easily with a little heat on the bracket around the bolts, some penatrating oil, and an impact wrench. The bracket needed a little heat to break the bond with the sheared b...

Re: 450B shifting speed

Hi, If you have the H-L-R transmission you need to adjust the main clutch free-play first (check your manual for proper spec), then adjust the shuttle shift. You will need a pressure gauge to tap into the pressure port under the transmission cover bung. Adjuster is on the top left side of transmissi...

Re: 450 E

Hi, Our dozer has 16" pads on it. Cut down pads and owner swapped 6 way blade are not encouraging signs. Figure a minimum of $6k for undercarriage repairs/parts replacement if the chains, pads, rollers and idlers need work and can be saved or rebuilt. $10k for a complete new undercarrige installed. ...

Re: 450 E

Hi,
Check the area where the frame bolts to the final drives. I looked at a few that had cracks and/or repairs done there. We've had good luck with our 450E and outside of fixing the water pump we have not had any major repairs. Good luck!

Hi Al,

Got the latest PM. Much better to have the actual part in hand for replication than some photos and measurements.

Best,

Re: Hydraulic tank question 450c

Hi, Sounds like the system is over filled with oil . The oil should be mid way up on the sight glass. There needs to be a few inches of headspace for the oil from the top of the tank to account for the extra volume of oil when cycling the cylinders (especially with a loader). Unless the oil is conta...

Re: 450C Dozer 1974 Transmission Oil Concern

Hi, Clutch drains are pipe plugs at bottom of housing (one on each side), they go up into the clutch housing, not to be confused with drain plugs on the final drives (bottom of final drives going in towards sprockets). I make my own gaskets when I'm in a pinch, but whatever works for you. I bought a...
