1957 John Deere 420 Crawler
Hi All I got on these boards almost a year ago looking for some advice about a clutch issue I was having. It was great to talk to folks on here and I especially am thankful for Lavoy for having all the parts Ive been needing for this thing. I was all set to split this thing and replace the clutch bu...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
So I went back up to the 420 dozer, which is in a remote location as I stated previously. We went up with every possible tool and with a lot of knowledge gathered from you all. Also had a new clutch assembly from Lavoy. Jim and others you guys were very helpful. My friend and I were there for a few ...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
how much does the engine weigh do you think? my plan is shaping up to be, start 420, blade up, engine shutdown, then start in gear, use steer levers to get it out of barn. remove blade from loader. prepare inside of barn, lay down 4x4 beams for tracks, 3/4 inch ply in between the beams to create a f...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
Lift the loader, shut it off, put it in second gear, start it, and go drive it around while holding the clutch pedal in. If you need to stop, pull the steering levers, it will stop. Put the scarifier down, or otherwise get some load on the crawler. You can't step on the brake as you shafts are rust...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear

I put in an kill switch, thanks for the diagram Jim.. I sprayed more PB blaster at it. I bought a propane torch at walmart thinking i could h...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
The last thing I did for the pedals was to spray pb blaster as best as I could at the shaft on the clutch side. Its definitely still bound together. at one point I unhooked the brake linkage to see if it might give the clutch some more movement but it didnt seem to make a difference, although I fail...

Re: 420c not shifting into gear
