450 H-L-R Transmission

Hello gents, it's me again... A few months ago I bought a 450 straight, crawler/loader, diesel, with a Hi-Lo-Reverser Transmission (mid 60's I think). You guys on here have given me tons of great insight and advise so I come to you with another conundrum... Since I bought the machine, I have been wo...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

UPDATE: I went to start her up and see if running her at a higher RPM would allow the piston to override the brake springs and allow free-spool and she wouldn't start... 2 new batteries and a new starter later, she fires up. I raise the RPM (with low hopes) and she doesn't free spool, ugh. I continu...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Well Fooie. I don't really know what I'm looking at though so I could be wrong. I'll do some digging and see if I can more positively identify the valve in question.

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Just a couple of additional ideas to contribute to the above. There is a small wire screen attached to the pick up for the hydraulic pump in the winch. This screen is a small tube with fine wire mess and gets plugged easily as the winches are often used hard and neglected. The screen is approximate...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Jim, I'll find out all about the grease zerk (if that's what it is) on the trans mesh screen cover when my parts get here to do the fluid changes and I'll definitely share what I find. I'm pretty darn sure that's what it is as it is pretty visible once you remove the right side floor board. The pic ...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

I thought about using a tractor to tug on the spool while it was in free spool mode but didn't want to mess anything up if there was a more sensible option, plus after testing the "wind in", there is now only like a foot of free cable and barely reaches the drum of the arch (which is a JD 3600 I fou...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Update: The shaft (whichever it may be, PTO or winch drive shaft) from the crawler that drives the winch is indeed turning at all times (at least when the crawler is in neutral). The winch does in fact wind, but when I move the lever to the rear position it will not free spool. not sure if there is ...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

LOL... The PO reported that "the winch works perfectly, push the lever forward to winch in and pull the lever back to free spool, the middle is neutral". That being said, I was an idiot and didn't operate/test the winch before I bought the crawler, I was going off the POs word that everything worked...

Re: 450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Gents, Jim and Bruce, Thanks for replying! You two seem to be the regulars here... good to know there are people out there willing to help a brother out. Tomorrow morning I will check the PTO to see if and when it is turning, having a PTO constantly turning doesn't compute with me since my other cra...

450 PTO control/engagement lever - where is it?

Hey everyone! For those who haven't seen any of my previous posts... I have a straight/plain 450 crawler loader (unsure of year due to serial number placard missing). The machine came outfitted with a 3305 winch off of a 540A skidder which is operated by a manual lever (assumed to be rigged up by th...

Re: HELP with ID and advice - 450 Crawler Loader?

The advice on the steering clutch is perfect and a lot of people will be using those technics to troubleshoot! I will as well once I get mine painted and fluids/filters changed out. Thanks!

Re: 450 Fluids, engine manufacturer and paint

Thanks for all the responses! The info was great! Update on the paint... I ended up buying a rattle can of John Deere "Old Construction Yellow" for $14 at my JD dealer to make sure it matched before I paid the $92 for the paint and $20? for the hardener. Match was spot on so I picked up a gallon of ...

450 Fluids, engine manufacturer and paint

Gents (and ladies I suppose), I bought a 450 straight (diesel), late 60s. I am getting ready to change all the fluids, filters, etc. This day and age I always go with full synthetic in my vehicles but with an older engine like these have I know they have more loose tolerances which would lend itself...

Re: Winch for 450D

I know this is an older thread but for those trying to figure this out... I recently bought a JD 450 (straight) and it came with a 3305 winch (any least that's what the tag on it says). I have yet to even test it out in the field much less tear into it to find out if any adapters were needed but it ...

Re: HELP with ID and advice - 450 Crawler Loader?

looks like you were able to get loaded up. yes is a bit convoluted on the instructions, but i had to show exactly what i did that did not work and asked for feedback, since has been a while that i have added pics, i will have to try to upload again and maybe can simplify instructions. was hoping to...
