Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

The day has finally come... Today I put the skid plate, side covers, grill and hood on. The exhaust stack will have to wait until I'm out from under the awning as it is too tall, that sucker is like 5' long. She's definitely not cut out for the forest YET. I'd like to eventually find or fabricate a ...

Re: 1/2” chain & 9/16” pads

Can you have Salt tracks without the alligator style master? Everyone of my pins has a dimple which I thought was also a sign of Salt tracks but I do not have the 2 piece master link. The may make them but I've never seen it. The vast majority of crawlers I've encountered have had DRY chain , mainl...

Re: 93 Series A Backhoe Leak

There should be o-rings as I recall. Not an easy task but not overwhelming either. Just messy and a bit time consuming. Do the valves come apart individually from the bottom or do you have to remove the entire bank of valves? I imagine disconnecting the lever linkage at the top, removing the shaft/...

Re: 1/2” chain & 9/16” pads

From my experience, 9/16" bolt holes on your old pads would indicate you have SALT chain on there right now and the chain you're looking at with 1/2" bolt holes suggests DRY chain. Just thought I'd bring up the fact that you'd be downgrading your tracks. Not that it would really matter but from what...

93 Series A Backhoe Leak

Does anyone have experience rebuilding leaking valves on a 93A backhoe attachment? I just restored mine cosmetically, made some new levers, replaced all the hoses, etc. then I hooked it the crawler and began operating it for the first time and noticed one of the valves under the operator levers (in ...

Anyone have any experience in fixing leaky backhoe valves? Is it easy or super involved? Any lessons learned when you repaired yours?

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

Jim: "If I am understanding what you did. Other than if a mechanical gauge is backlit (or on that is part of a shutdown system like a Murphy gauge set up) for night operation it should not have any wires hooked to it. I would say start by unhooking the wires from the gauge posts and taping the ends ...

Re: 450B - Need Electrical HELP!

Jim, you're my hero of the day! Happy to report she fired right up after disconnecting and taping up the ends real good. The mechanical gauges are reading like they should with no leaks. Looking at the old gauges, you were totally right, like usual, they were insulated posts, both at the gauge as we...

Re: 450B - Need Electrical HELP!

Very good insight Jim, thanks so much! Makes sense. I'll give it a go to see what happens and report. BTW the new gauges are indeed backlit but I just taped them up for now, as you know, I am not good with electrical stuff and the last thing I want to fool with is figuring out the best place to atta...

450B - Need Electrical HELP!

Ok guys, I need some electrical help. I swapped out the electrical sending unit style gauges for engine temp and oil pressure for mechanical gauges and I also swapped out the ammeter because it was part of that kit I got from NAPA so why not right. Now, the machine won't start. Without pushing the s...

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

I may be mistaken, but I believe the tool is the same tool used for 5.9 Cummins. There are many inexpensive aftermarket tools for this available online. Found one for $19 (even cheaper if you can wait on shipping from CA), now that's a pill I can swallow, especially since I'm a big 5.9 fan and will...

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

Hi, On turning the engine over by hand, I use the drive gear tool. Now, which one of those does your engine require? Deere has had several over the years. Anyway, one sticks it in the hole and uses a ratchet to crank it and a pin in the small hole to push into the hole in the flywheel for TDC. That...

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

Took a lot more effort than expected but finally got all the parts to get the 4-in-1 bucket plumbed up from the operator to the bucket, with quick couplers at the bucket. Got it all plumbed up just the way I want it, just need to literally bang out some well fitting brackets to hold everything in pl...

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

Next up is valve tappet adjustment which I was gonna do last night but because of where I'm parked, I'll need to wait until it stops raining. I parked sideways under the awning but the hoe limits me on how far I can pull in which leaved my bucket still under the awning and of course the loader needs...
