Re: 350 steering clutches
I’m gonna try a longer bolt. This side had been apart before repeatedly. Funny thing is I already installed a 3/8 16 Heli coil on the pinion bearing cap. Wasn’t sure they made a repair kit that big. Apparently they do. 85 bucks. Well if the longer bolt doesn’t work I’ll try the Heli coil. At least a...

Re: 350 steering clutches
Hey folks, so things have gone great. New pinion bearings , shafts repaired and using the feeler gauge with no shims in addition to the dial indicator gave me comfortable results. Thanks. Both finals installed and looking good. However when the finals were off the machine I chased all threads of the...

Re: 350 steering clutches
First of thanks for the responses. Secondly I apologize for the fact that when I re-examined the book it clearly shows the “technician “ moving the shaft in/out by hand with the indicator attached, not sure how I went wrong there. I will definitely use both methods to determine an average/ final set...

Re: 350 steering clutches
1ton or 30 tons like a caterpillar? I made a jig to separate and to press back together. I can’t move the bearings on the shaft by hand. When dial indicator is installed I’m using a 2’ tire spoon to pry on the splined hub which is enough force to move the shaft in the races. You’ve obviously worked ...

Re: 350 steering clutches
I hope my explanation was understandable? Both inner and outer bearings have a different inside diameter and both sit against a different part of the shaft. Once both are pressed all the way on the circlip goes on Shims then quill. When dial indicator is placed against splined end of shaft, you meas...

Re: 350 steering clutches
Hey folks, so I’m having a really hard time accurately measuring preload on my final drive pinion shaft due to the fact that if enough force is applied you can actually move the pinion shaft within the inner bearing races. So I guess I’m just supposed to measure the play that I can develop with my h...

Re: 350 steering clutches
Hopefully this is my last question, lol. I would prefer to reassemble with drive shafts installed in ring and pinion housing for clearance reasons, anyone see a problem with this? They came out that way. Thanks John

Re: 350 steering clutches
I don’t want to sound like a broken record but I can only get these shaft s out an inch or two. Anybody else run into this problem and have to device a puller? Thanks John

Re: 350 steering clutches
All of my parts showed up today. Everything looks excellent. Thanks. Any thoughts on removal of the shafts from ring and pinion case? I was advised to remove, clean, and lubricate prior to reasembly? Thanks John

Re: 350 steering clutches
Thanks for the advice. I’m assuming that you mean to put an o-ring on the shaft against the pilot bearing? I ordered new pilot bearings. I can’t really get the shafts to pull out of the differential, only an inch or two. Chinese finger hooked to slide hammer? Thanks John

Re: 350 steering clutches
Thank you. During final drive removal both of my drive shafts stayed in ring and pinion hosing separating from the clutche hubs, is this normal because book shows it coming out with final. Second there is no trace of gear oil scent in either clutch housing but I’m thinking I want to replace the the ...

Re: 350 steering clutches
Hey folks, because I can’t post pictures directly from my phone(and my limited device experience) I haven’t done so yet maybe I’ll figure it out. Anyway my clutch housings are so dirty and corroded that they really should be removed and set on the bench. However I’m reluctant to do so because the ma...

Re: 350 steering clutches
Thanks, I pulled both sides easily with clutches connected. Now just have to clean everything and make parts list. It’s possible the one from 8 or 9 years ago came out the same way. Not sure, nevertheless I got it apart. 6 months ago I bought the 3/4” earth quake impact. 3/4” copper and 1/2” air lin...
