The detent mechanism is holding the valve in the curl position, so you don't have to hold it in. When the switch activates, the detent releases the spool and the valve is returned to neutral by the spring. But if you continue to hold the valve lever in the curl position with your hand, the valve rem...

On my 455D the bucket control valve has a detent on the curl position that holds the valve in the curl position (ie, returning bucket from dump position) until 12VDC is applied to the solenoid located on the valve, at which time it is released from the detent. The switch on the loader bucket link ju...

Backhoe swing motor

This board has been invaluable in dealing with the HLR transmission and injection pump on my 455D. Thanks to all who help out novices like me. I am now moving to the swing motor on the backhoe. Once I got the tractor itself working pretty well I started using the backhoe more often and, naturally, t...

KenP: I had the same problem on a 9300 backhoe, which I think is similar. It turned out to be much easier than I expected. You are correct about how it works, but here are some details that might be helpful. Park with the rear hanging over a hill (or back up on blocks or dig a trench) so the boom ca...

Paul: I had exactly the same issues with a 455D. The boom ends were so worn that the prior abuser had hammered in 1 7/8" pins where 1 3/4" pins had been. Fortunately, the bushings were not completely worn through so the bosses were okay. I used replacement bushings from JD since they are hardened, b...

Thanks to all of you for the info on the various JD Backhoes. Before I joined this board I bought a JD455D with a rotary vane swing motor backhoe. This was not the backhoe that came with the 455D (so I was told), but one that the dealer bought separately. The backhoe is in pretty good shape. No bent...

I have bought quite a bit from MetalExpress. I usually find that the ID is a few thousandths smaller than the predicted size (OD minus twice wall thickness). A few passes with an adjustable size cylinder hone results in a snug fit.

450 vs D3B

I have a D3B, swamp pads, 6 way PAT blade, 3F1R Powershift with torque converter. I also have a 455D crawler loader/backhoe (first cousin to the 450C), HLR Powershift transmission with manual clutch. Each is about 25 years old and has about 6000hrs. The 455 has required more "small" stuff, including...
