Re: HLR pressure gauge.
On my 455D the access plug in the transmission top cover under the seat that lets you check transmission pressure has a pipe thread. I can't remember the size; same as a 55 gallon drum I think. I replaced the screw out plug with a short pipe nipple and screwed a pipe cap on the nipple. I drilled a h...

No problem. All the bolts (12 point bolts attaching the vane to the barrel and hex bolts attaching the top and bottom covers) call for 375 foot pounds of torque, dry (which incidently is the maximum recommended toque for a 3/4 x 10 grade 8 bolt). On mine, the bolts attaching the vane to the shaft mu...

Glad it helped. Tap them back in with a hammer; I drilled a shallow 5/8" hole in the end of a short length of 1" mild steel round bar to put over the end of the pin to minimize the distortion from pounding; probably not necessary since the pins are hardened. The bolts are to be tightened to 375 foot...

Those are dowel pins that are a tight press fit in the shaft and a somewhat lighter press fit in the seal holder. Put a 5/8 x 11 nut on the threaded part of the pin and turn the nut clockwise to tighten; that will pull the pin out of the bore. Be careful; after three or four turns of the nut the unt...

I thought I must have been doing something wrong when I destroyed an OTC brand slide puller trying (unsuccessfully) to remove the injectors on my 455D a few years ago. Fortunately (?) I gave up for a while and by the time I returned to the project it needed a new head gasket as well. Then I saw a po...

Mower gearbox
Several skid steer mower manufacturers use a cast or welded bracket to hold a hydraulic motor on one end and a mower shaft on the other end apparently in separate bearings so that only the torque load is on the motor. I have never seen them for sale separately; perhaps you could buy one as a replace...

Hutch: I wanted the same thing for my Cat D3B and had the same worries you did. So I made something like your picture, with a twist. The ripper teeth face forward and a pin that holds the ripper shanks in place when you go forward; that way, the ripping takes place at the same time you are pushing d...

Often when the head gasket fails (or was improperly installed), when you stop the engine after it has warmed up the pressure in the cooling system will force coolant past the head gasket into the cylinder. Then if your start the engine after it sits a few minutes the exhaust smoke will be greyish wh...

I am with vestor_guy; when you brake to turn the slack in the inside track bunches up between the rear roller and sprocket. The sidewise motion of the rear of the machine toward the outside of the turn can move the track enough that the chain hangs on the edge of the sprocket teeth. If you check the...

I haven't had much luck getting those pencil injectors out whole. The last set were apparently the original injectors on a 25 year old 455D. An OTC puller that worked on a prior set spread its legs apart on #2 after pulling the collar off #3. I finally removed the head and pounded the injectors out ...

AHH! The transmission temperature gauge. The sending unit screws into the cover of the transmission fluid filter screen. The cover is a triangular plate that bolts onto the lower right side of the transmission. The plate is about 6 inches on each side and has a boss cast into it in the center. That ...

On my 455D, Right side of transmission, closer to seat than dash, way down low. A little bump cast into the transmission case with a threaded hole pointing up and to the rear. Mine was covered with grime and I could not even see it until I took a slender stick and scraped the side of the transmissio...
