Re: 450B - mystery with transmission front cover

Hi there guys. Thanks Jim for posting the 2 pictures. My cover is the 2nd pix with NO PTO hole. I noticed something interesting comparing both pix and my cover. It is a little tough to see in 2nd pix but there are now actually 2 different part numbers cast into the cover. Top number is T58728, botto...

Re: 450B - mystery with transmission front cover

Leonard, you are being too hard on yourself. Your insight has been extraordinary helpful. Helping me think carefully through this puzzle. I am still laughing at your wise comment, "old age is not golden, more like corrosion" I am suffering from the same malady, hehehe. Like you, I have been turning ...

Re: 450B - mystery with transmission front cover

Thank you Jim & Leonard for all your continued help in attempting to solve the ball mystery. Two things are certain regarding my 450B cover. There is only one place the ball could go and that is down in the bottom of the hole for the bypass valve. There are no openings (for metal plugs) on either th...

Re: 450B - mystery with transmission front cover

Your info is extremely helpful. My understanding of the text shown is the ball inserts in the hole and then plug "item 3" is inserted. Do you agree ? If that is the case, then my 450B does not need the ball. There is no hole for plug item 3, just a perfectly smooth machined surface for the oil pump ...

450B - mystery with transmission front cover

A good exploded view of 450B transmission front cover is shown in John Deere parts catalog page 35-6. At top of page is shown "item 3", part number D2361R steel ball. Unfortunately, it is not clear to me where the ball is located. Please, please ... I hope there is one of you guys out there with 450...

Re: 450B - location of .500" ball in transmission front cover

You made 2 specific points that encourage me we are on the right track. Your 1st point "I know the ball goes in that position". Your 2nd point "I knew the cover had to be installed before the ball could be or it would fall back out". I remain hopeful one of the gang who works more frequently with th...

Re: 450B - location of .500" ball in transmission front cover

I can't thank you enuf for continuing to dig on my question. The link worked and I see that JD at least added dotted line in the later model to indicate the sequence of parts stackup for "oil pressure regulating valve" that mounts in that top hole. It still concerns me that we have not yet seen docu...

Re: 450B - location of .500" ball in transmission front cover

Thanks for the response. Do you recall if the ball would just "fall out" if you turned the cover over ? If so, you are helping to confirm the ball was missing in my cover for the entire 10yrs we've owned the beast. I remain hopeful your response will trigger additional insights from more of the gang.

450B - location of .500" ball in transmission front cover

My family has owned this 450B for last 10 years. 8 yrs ago we pulled engine and rebuilt including replace clutch. At that time, we did NOT remove bell housing or oil pump on front transmission cover or front transmission cover. Few weeks ago disaster struck. Clutch destroyed itself. Nothing left of ...
