350 snow calk questions

My 350B loader has the snow calks on the track shoes (Deere part number M3950T). They are all still installed except one that is missing. When running around the lawn and making a turn, they do tear things up more than just the plain loader shoes. I am debating taking them off. Is this a bad idea? I...

If you ever come up with a photo album of all this, let me know the link. I would love to see the process.

Re: '73 - 450B Crawler/Loader/Hoe Restoration

Did you find or repair all of the rigid lines you needed? I know the "Deere factory surcharge" can be expensive, but I think they can fabricate all the lines. I used to own a 1954 40 Utility tractor, and when I rebuilt it I had to find most of the rigid hydraulic lines because over the years previou...

Re: priming the diesel fuel system after fuel filter change on 350B

Cordless, I did what you said. Bought a new pump with the priming lever from Deere (the two vertical towers style), checked the gasket in the upper groove on the filter housing (a big thank you for that one!), and cracked the lines to bleed. With the working starter and correct transfer pump, all is...

Re: 1968 350 Diesel starter question

Lavoy was correct, as usual. The starter was so much fun to pull out, I did it twice. LOL Something is still not right with the solenoid, and the local Deere dealer had a starter for $200. New starter installed and it starts right up! Once I figured out the correct collection of tools to get the sta...

Re: J. Deere 350B: 3 point hitch for sale

By chance is the donor crawler still around? The reason I ask is because my 350B has a 3 pt hitch but I don't see any way to operate it. There is a Drott 4-in-1 bucket on it, with a separate control lever. There is no diverter valve to use the Drott lever to control the 3 pt. In the 350B operator's ...

Re: priming the diesel fuel system after fuel filter change on 350B

Jim, Thanks for the tip on the top gasket. I will double check that. I was thinking of attempting a gravity bleed by leaving the bleeder open on top of the filter housing. I may do that, since my fuel tank is fairly full. I can probably just leave the bleeder open over night, since I wasn't seeing m...

priming the diesel fuel system after fuel filter change on 350B

On to my next adventure... I finished my starter project, but I had to pull off the diesel transfer pump, and while I was in there I replaced the two fuel filters. Apparently I have an aftermarket transfer pump without a priming lever. Is there any way to prime the diesel fuel system at least as far...

Re: 1968 350 Diesel starter question

Jim B, When I was putting everything back together just now I checked. The replacement transfer pump I have does not have a priming lever. The mounting point is on the pump casting, but is isn't machined for the priming lever. So, I guess I will be spending some money! Since I can't see any way to p...

Re: 1968 350 Diesel starter question

I got the starter out yesterday afternoon. It involved an odd assortment of socket and extension pieces to get at the starter bolts. I don't know what the engineers were thinking. The gasket between the solenoid and main starter body was some type of plastic, or 50 year old rubber, and was split in ...

It looks like the fuel pump and dipstick tube need to come out. They don't look too bad to remove.

Re: 1968 350 Diesel starter question

Lavoy, Don't worry. Once a starter goes back in (notice I didn't say it had to be the original starter LOL) I don't plan on taking it back out. I'd already have it out, but I won't have the piece of pipe cut in half to support the loader cylinders until tomorrow night. I do pay attention to your tip...

Re: 1968 350 Diesel starter question

Thank you, all! I will check tonight to see if I have to pull the fuel pump to get the starter out. I think it's just dirty from being more than 50 years old and having sat for a while before I bought it. I guess if I get it out, and it looks like a bigger project, I'll have it out as the core for t...

1968 350 Diesel starter question

Half the time when I attempt to start my crawler, the starter spins, but the engine doesn't turn over. Eventually after trying 10 or 15 times, the drive gear on the starter engages the flywheel, and the engine turns over and starts right up. I am guessing this means either something in the over run ...

Lavoy recommended I measure it.
I guess my project tomorrow will be to figure out how to remove it.
Among other projects.
