Ignition problem
The old 420 was running well until last year. While under load, it began cutting out, and then running well. The cutting out episodes seemed to increase. It sat for a few months, and I tried to start it. It wouldn't fire. It's now been sitting for about a year, and I finally got back to it. Now, it ...

The seemingly simple tasks can sometimes be the worst. Not long ago, in the local area, I read of a man who lost his life while loading his wheel tractor at a show. He drove on instead of backing on. It torqued over backwards, and onto him. I understand the reasoning, and appreaciate it, but, as we ...

I have watched them work slopes that I would have thought totally impossible, but they were experienced ops. I know that I do not have the guts to ride one horizontal on anything approaching 100%, but I am curious as to max, and I am curious as to just how far I am going. I'm going to rig a gauge. I...

I never rolled, but I had a couple of close calls with an old case davis trencher (still have it), and I don't think there was even a few seconds of notice. Concentrating on the digging, things happen so damn fast, there really isn't any reaction time. No ROPS on the trencher, either. It really was ...

Tigerhaze, I, too, saw them someplace, but I have been unable to locate them on searches. I did find something about 45 degrees, or 100 percent. I suspect most may be unwilling to nail it down completely because of so many variances in operating conditions. I think I will end up just hanging some so...

Yes, I do not drive a vehicle without seat belts, and do not get on a motorcycle without a helmet, or with any beer in my belly. I detest the laws of the land (concerning belts and helmets), but I appreciate the laws of physics. I probably could be encouraged to wear a belt on the little cat, but it...

Davie, I have a '56 420c with a holt blade. It had no ROPS. I found a certified unit for a 350. It had been "used," and all the legs were slightly bent. I straighten the legs, manufactured mounts to the cross bar for the front, and to the rear of the finals for the rear. I understand that the bent l...

420 roll-over angle
Anybody know if there are any published stats on what the roll-over angle is for a 420c with a ROPS/FOPS, and what the angle might be???
I am going to put some sort of protractor/plumb bob thing on it so I can see were I am. I'm curious.

420 top idlers and hydraulics
I'm sure all the old salts know about this, but some of the less initiated might benefit.... Earlier this winter, I ran the 420 in mud. Then we snowbirded for a spell. After returning, I put it back in service, and started pushing dirt instead of mud. After about a week, I decided I should poke arou...

Howard, Actually, I'm building road into a piece of property we hope to sell so we can go spend the money with reckless abandon. Problem is, it's Southern Oregon, and everything is about a steep as a cow's face. Big trees and big stumps, but not too many rocks...yet. A 450 might be better, but the l...

Operational 420
I spent most of last year rebuilding a 420c, and was on the board a lot asking questions, and seeking answers. In December, I had it up and running, but had some problems during the first couple of days of operation. Then we went south to escape the cold. We just got back, and I have been pushing di...

2010 for sale
I just stumbled on an add in our local Equipment Trader for a 2010 with angle/tilt blade. I know nothing aobut the seller. $6,000; Jon Sheppard Logging, Chiloquin, Oregon 541-783-2207, 541-891-2278 The photo is small, and not too clear, but it has a ROPS with limb risers, and appears to have all the...
