Given the simplicity of the attachment point for the seat frame, I'm surprised that more people don't opt to put in a universal tractor seat bolted onto some treated plywood in lieu of the OEM; maybe even spring for a suspension seat... pun intended.

Yes, you should see some voltage at a sender's wire from the gauge. generally grounding a wire at the sender will make the gauge needle sweep full range.
