I think it was easier rebuilding the final than posting a picture! But thanks Lavoy, that makes me feel a lot better. Can't wait to slap it back in and start playing around on it.

If this posting works, below is the pressure plate before bolting down, just resting on top of the clutch disks.

adjusting the steering clutch fingers 420c

In the final stages of rebuilding the left final and steering clutch in a 56 420c. Put in 7 new fibers and 6 new steels, bolted down new pressure plate, set new steering clutch gauge on the brake drum and even with the adjusting nuts all of the way down, could not get the fingers to touch the gauge ...

Bob or anyone, On those plates that you made to draw the races in, what thickness of plate did you use? I was thinking around 5/16" or 3/8". I'm going to the metal shop tomorrow and get 4 round plates made with a bolt hole centered in each in the following diameters: 2 3/8", 2 11/16", 3 1/4". Also a...

420c final drive

Hey all, Now have all parts to reassemble the final drive (thanks Lavoy). My question is, what have you all found to be the best way to install the bearings and cups? Do you use a press or slide hammer? The outer bearing on the flanged axle - do you use a scrap piece of tubing the right size to pres...

Thanks for all the good info. I'm going to need a new pinion gear. Luckily, I do have a spare bull gear ($$$).

Thanks Lavoy. Since I will probably end up pulling at least 4 in the next year or two (both crawlers), would it be cheaper to rent or buy? Does anyone have a favorite brand that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Best tool for the job

Looks like I’m going to have purchase or rent a gear puller for pulling final drive and pinion gears. Looking through northern tool, there doesn’t seem to be anything similar to that shown in the Deere Manual. Does anyone have a recommendation for a gear puller for pulling final drive gears and pini...

Getting ready to pull the final

I'll try to post a couple of pictures of the 420c with the track split.

Thanks for the replies and the link. A wealth of information here. Hopefully the final will come off as easy as the track.

final drive housing 420c

I want to fabricate a lifting yoke similar to the one shown in the service manual for lifting the final drive housing away from the steering clutch housing, but I don't have the crawler handy to measure the distance between to top two bolt holes in the final drive assembly. If anyone has this measur...

Truck Crane

Hi all,
Would a 1/2 ton truck crane be suitable for most lifting work on a 420c and 440icd? I need something to lift the finals off the 420c and probably lift the motor out of the 440icd.
Thanks, Andy

That makes sense. The extra weight of the loader plus you're generally doing alot more turning than you are when you're dozing. I'll stick with the street pads and re-bolt them. Maybe a little hard-facing on the wear edges.
