final drive case
a friend broke his final drive case on his 420c. i believe it is broken across across where the upper shaft bearing quill bolts on. i have not seen it. i dont know if it would be possible to weld it up as the tolerence is so specific there. he is looking for a new case and found one for $450.00 is t...

420c reverser
Lavoy, yes i do want to replace all the bearings and seals, might as well do that pilot bearing and detent ball spring and plug. the thrust plate looks excellent, no wear at all, might as well get the main gasket too. if you have all the thrust washers for it, might as well put new ones in too. let ...

420c reverser
lavoy, thanks for the info. if you can get all the parts i need, i will go with you. it will save me time of trying to explain that thrust bearing over the phone. the closest dealer is more than just an hours drive. i don`t have a parts book, just the service manual and for some reason i can`t get t...

420c direction reverser
Lavoy, i did get the reverser tore down last week, first chance i`ve had to reply. the thrust bearing towards the front of the unit are shot, guess the grinding were enough to jam up the splines on shifter coupling. the detent ball fell out while taking it apart, but have not knocked out the plug an...

starting problem
to update my starting problem. i`m still baffled as to why it would not start, but i did get it going and starts up right now without a problem. i took the carburator apart and cleaned it several times. i put new plugs in and had good spark. checked the timing and it was dead on. still would not go....

upgrades
Ha! you just hit the nail on the head on spending 10 hours building something instead of paying somebody $10.00 i find myself doing that way too much! guess it isnt the money, but the satisfaction of building or doing something different from the ordinary. this starter on the 420 is a case in point....

Grousers
I stand corrected! the grousers are for my D4. somebody out there must have made something besides welding grousers on. i think back in WW2 the tank crews had trouble with too soft ground and somebody came up with bolt on "Duck feet?" which extended the width of the pads. if that would work on a muc...

conversions, upgrades, other parts?
i`d be interested to know what kind of improvements, cross matching parts, or other types of conversions anybody has done on any part of your crawlers. i`m a tinker and can build almost anything, always looking for different and new ideas. maybe i`m just cheap!

track jack
if you split the track in front of the idler and you have the tracks slacked off, its very easy to put back together. i did use a come-a-long hooked on to the blade to pull up the slack, just hook on to the track a foot or so behind the front idler wheel so you have enough slack for it to hang over ...

starter cross reference?
Lavoy, just got my own curiosity up a bit now. just checked ford tractor parts, they sell NEW starters, minus the starter drive for $130 of course i dont know which way they turn, but will find out soon as i have a ford jubilee also. i love the 420 john deere, but john deere parts are expensive and ...
