Re: 420 hydraulic schematics

Should be. I just rebuilt the pump but haven’t fired the tractor back up yet. Going to pull the valve stack and see if I can figure out why the fitting going back into the reservoir is leaking so badly.

Re: 420 hydraulic schematics

My tractor is a 40C and has that pump. When the blade was added 3 years later, they added the 420c hydraulic valve stack, controls, and reservoir.

420 hydraulic schematics

Hello All, I'm working through a bunch of little issues on my dad's old 1955 JD 40C. It has a Gladden-Haas 6' front blade on it, model J-82. It was made in Owosso, MI and I have a print of it dated 1958. Interestingly enough, it says 420C crawler blade on the print. So, with Lavoy's help, I have bee...

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Final drive is back together - went together last Saturday very easily. It would have been my dad's 95 birthday, so I think he was there and smiling that I finally figured out what was amiss with the final drive. The throwout bearing was seized to the sleeve so I could never adjust it close enough b...

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Been a while since I posted on here. Lavoy helped me figure out what was going on. He got me set up with new fiber discs, a pinion seal and throw out bearing and sleeve. Then found out some was wonky with my T/O bearing retainer so have one of those coming now too! Radiator was steaming so I pulled ...

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Yeah, I got confused. That was from the back side I got the 90W. I’m learning this old girl very slowly-please pardon my ignorance.

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Well, I don’t think the brake or the clutch was adjusted properly now that I’ve talked to a few of you smart fellers on here. I’m a novice with this thing, so I’m learning as I go. I hoping to find out if the discs need replacing based on thickness so I can put it back together. Should I just replac...

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Thanks for the info! Clutches and steels look good. Brake band does too, other than it looks like dad had some trouble either taking it apart or putting it together. The surface is a little gouged up, so may warrant replacement. I’ve got a couple in boxes I will pull out and measure, too. Could easy...

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Forgot to mention: I have the left hand side apart currently. Left as in if I was sitting in the seat facing forward.

Re: 40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Well, I’m confused then. If I’m in the seat facing forward and pull the brake lever on the right side, it locks up the right side track and turns the tractor that direction. The brake lever on the left side does absolutely nothing when pulled.

40C not turning to the left - fiber clutch thickness

Good morning Everyone, I posted some time ago that I inherited my dad's 1955 40C. He bought it new and from what my mother told me when she was alive, he did it without asking her! Brave man, for sure! It needs some TLC but it's mechanically pretty good. Runs great! Biggest issue is that it won't tu...

Re: Newbie from MI

The "water pump leak" is actually the hydraulic pump gasket weeping a touch where it's bolted to the motor. Once I get the radiator out of it to get that fixed up, I'll see if it needs a new gasket or just is loose. I did find the main line out of the hydraulic oil tank was loose so I got that tight...

Re: Newbie from MI

OK. It is definitely a 40, not a 420 and a 1955 model. I’ll dig into it more in the next couple of weeks, but have a few other projects I need to button up first.
