Thank you

450 Transmission swap
I have a JD450 dozer, approximately a 1970 build, and am having transmission trouble. Repair shop hasn't diagnosed yet but wanting to get a head start in case I need another tranny. Repair shop recommended changing Constant Mesh Transmission out for the H-L-R tranny if another one is warranted. My q...

Re: 450 Dozer - Loud noise when in Reverse
Thanks for the reply, sorry for the slow response. Took it to a repair shop 4 weeks ago and still waiting on diagnosis but they said I should consider a used transmission if it is torn up enough. Also that I should consider the HLR transmission with hydraulic reverser. Is that a difficult conversion?

450 Dozer - Loud noise when in Reverse
Hello all! I'm hoping for direction and maintenance wisdom. I have a straight 450 dozer that has a very loud noise when I let off clutch while in reverse. This noise is loud even when just above low idle. When I very slowly let out clutch and feel the transmission just beginning to pull the dozer, t...

Re: Engine compression tester for a 450 / Coolant in oil pan
Looks like I have the 202 engine based on comparing parts to engine bore specs, rebuild kit information on correct kit using push rod no. and engine block casting number. Then to make me feel even more sure, your information of larger bore size for the 219. I appreciate the help!

Re: Engine compression tester for a 450 / Coolant in oil pan
Gentlemen, Thank you for the reply and knowledge shared. I removed the head and oil pan. Looks like coolant is getting past liners. Will do an in-frame overhaul. Jim, I am assuming that this has a\the 202 only because the repair manual given with my recent purchase designates it as a 202. Engine cas...

Help with engine identification
I have a straight 450, I'm told, with constant mesh transmission. 4 cylinder DIESEL engine with engine block casting number T24961. Coolant is in crankcase so parts will be needed. Does anyone know for sure if this would be a 4-202 engine and a straight 450? Any chance it would be a 4-219 engine? It...

Engine compression tester for a 450 / Coolant in oil pan
Hello all. This is a great site for us John Deere owners, especially a new one like me who is learning. Thank you to the administrators! I have a straight 450 dozer, with the 4-202 DIESEL engine, that has coolant leaking into the crankcase. I will begin to work on removing head to check for head gas...

Re: Crankcase oil contamination serial number help
Thank you for the reply, Jim B. I checked the other day and it is definitely coolant. I spoke to a guy that works on these and he said 90% of the time it's the piston liner that develops a hole and allows coolant in. Will have to start tearing into it. Yes the drain plug in bottom of pan. The 2 hole...

Crankcase oil contamination serial number help
Hello all! I'm brand new to this forum and to owning a JD450 dozer. I'm told it's a straight 450. I have 3 questions I hope to get some guidance on. Question #1- I am losing coolant and the oil level has risen an inch or so on dip stick. I am assuming coolant is getting into crankcase after adding a...
