Its OK, found the size in the manual, 1/2 Inch Hex Plug.

Thanks for the reply! you dont happen to know the size of the drain bolts on the bottom of the steering clutch sumps? one of them is rounded off and i forgot to grab the other to take into the shop to get a replacement. The are allen/hex head pipe plugs (as we call them) but just dont know the size.

I have rebuilt the steering clutches on my 76 450C and it has a common sump. Daft question (probably) but do i need to fill each side with oil separately? OK, finally got the 4 large bolts undone that hold on the bell housing using heat, and a very long pry bar on the ratchet i was using. The short answer is YES you need to remove the bell housing to get into the clutch/transmission pump.

Thanks Jim, im now faced with the issue of these being absolutely rock solid and wont move! thats my next issue...all to get to the transmission pump.

Im working on my 1976 JD450 C and i need to remove the bell housing, does anyone know the bolt size (the large 4 bolts - 2 on each side)? in mm looks about 32mm head. The reason im asking is i need to purchase a socket to remove them (i know they are imperial size...) but not sure what size i need t...
