Are the inserts (cups) used to seat the balls available anywhere? One of mine went missing during the clutch job on my 440IC.

Track Adjusting Tube for JD440IC

Hello,

I am building a replacement for the bent adjusting tube for the track tensioner on my JD440IC. Has anyone built one before?

I need to know the best choice for the tube - 2.375" OD, 0.218" WT. The tube appears to be made from a 2" schedule 80 steel pipe.

Thanks,

Derek (JD440)

Welding JD440 Parts

Hello, I have to repair a couple of parts on my 1958 JD440IC. The steering clutch housing has broken bolt holes at the bottom and the front track idler has a crack across a spoke. I took out my handy angle grinder and ground a little of the material in the area of the breaks. The sparks were yellow ...

Can the fibre disks be dried out and reused or are they garbage?

JD440IC Seat Brackets

Hello, I have removed my seat frame from the mounting bracket and parts of it look bent. Could someone have a look at the accompanying photo and tell me what the problem may be? I would like to fix up the seat and re-install it, when I put my left steering clutch back together. Thanks, Derek http://...

Rebuilding Steering Clutches on JD440

Hi Lavoy, I found a local John Deere mechanic that has experience with the JD440IC - in fact he owned one. He looked at the clutch pieces and gave me his opinion. He said that we can salvage most of the parts except one metal disk and one fibre disk. He also recommended replacing the pressure plate ...

Rebuilding Steering Clutches on JD440

Hello Lavoy and others, I have 2 quick questions. First, I am having trouble removing the steering clutch drive shaft from the final drive shaft. Is there a trick to this? Of course the clutch is fully disassembled and all the plates removed. Second. Lavoy, are your replacement clutch parts made in ...

Rebuilding Steering Clutches on JD440

Hello again, I just checked out my throw-out bearing for the left steering clutch and it needs to be replaced. Do you have a replacement in stock Lavoy? If so, what is the JD part number and price? I like to keep track of part numbers, so it easier to order replacement parts next time. Thanks, Derek...

Rebuilding Steering Clutches on JD440

Hello, I am rebuilding the steering clutches on my 1958 JD440IC. The left side slips and the right side won't release. I am starting with the left side first. When I removed the left steering clutch assembly, I found that it had 7 metal plates and 7 fibre disks. I have a photocopy of a page from the...

JD440 Oil Filter

Good news Lavoy, there is oil coming out of the oil filter port when I turn over the engine. Now all I need to do is add a new oil pressure gauge. The service manual recommends 20W oil, is it all right to use a 10W30 oil? My weather conditions are very similar to Washington state - lows to freezing ...

Hi Lavoy, I think you are right! When I look up into the can, I can see a flat disk which I had mistaken for the bottom (top?) of the can. Boy do I feel stupid, but happy that the parts must be there. Now when I took off the can, there was very little oil in it. In fact, the inside of the oil filter...

JD 440IC Oil Filter Parts

Hello, I bought a JD440IC a short time ago and I went to change the engine oil and filter. There was a distinct shortage of parts in the oil filter case. There was only an oil filter element (very clean looking) and a flat disk (lower sealing plate) under it. The other parts are missing - this means...

Service and Parts Manuals

Hello, I was able to buy a JD440 Gas Crawler service manual on CD from my local tractor dealer - who obtained it directly from John Deere. However, it is all pictures - in other words, it is not searchable. I printed it off and the manual is clear enough for most purposes. I do need a parts manual. ...

Hi Jimmy, It appears that the starter is the same on John Deere models L, LA, M, MT, 40, 420, 430, 440, 320 and 330. The spring is a part number A 566000, and it is used on Allis Chalmers, Case, International, Massey Ferguson and of course, John Deere tractors. With this number of makes and models, ...
