Sticky Loader Lift Valve

Hello, The control valve for raising and lowering the loader on my JD440IC has become sticky. It takes more force to activate the valve and it can stick on causing the loader to keep on dropping or lifting. Sometimes, I have to force it back into the neutral position. This occurred overnight. One da...

Nice End to the Story

My 440IC crawler is now running well and the air cleaner appears to be working! Thanks again for everyone's help.

JD440IC Carb and Air Cleaner

Hello Everyone, Carburetor: The carb cleaned up nicely. I stripped it down, blasted it with glass beads (instead of sand) and then blew out the ports with compressed air. I spray painted the outside of the carb (to keep the rust down) and then reassembled it with a kit from Lavoy (including a new th...

Thanks for the information. I am on a spelunking (caving) vacation this weekend, but I will be home later today. I'll let you know how it goes. :D

Depth of down pipe in oil bath air cleaner

Hello, Did anyone manage to find out how deep the down pipe goes into the oil bath, preferably for a 440IC but any oil bath air filter will do? :? This is the last thing I have to repair before putting my crawler back into action. The engine is back together and running, but the air cleaner is not r...

Thanks Howard, I'll definitely have a look behind the side plate on the winch or no deal. I did find a JD 420 engine on Ebay for $250. However, it doesn't look as good as the one I found. But you never know what's inside until you look. Here's the Ebay engine link: http://cgi.ebay.com/John-Deere-420...

420 Engine and Winch

Hello, I am looking for a spare engine for my 440IC and I found a 420 engine which Lavoy says should fit (earlier post). The engine has been out of the crawler for a few years but looks in good shape. Any suggestions on what I can do to test the engine before it goes in my crawler? It does not have ...

JD440IC Head Gasket

I'll put in an order for a full gasket set with Lavoy.

Thanks for the comments.

Reuse Head Gasket?

Hi,

I know that with motorcycles if the head gasket looks good, it can be reused. Is this the same with the 2-cylinder John Deeres?

I'd rather not spend extra money putting the engine back together, as I will be doing a full rebuild on it after my shop is built.

Thanks,

Derek

Missing Choke Flapper Valve

Thanks Hunter41mag, The choke plate flapper is missing and the crawler has been harder to start lately. Much harder now that the cylinder head is off. I guess I'll have to track down a replacement or make a new choke plate flapper. I still haven't got a measurement for the length of the down pipe on...

Operation of Oil Bath Air Filter

From my research, the oil bath is located just below the end of the down tube. The dirty air goes down the tube, makes a quick 180 over the pool of oil and up through the filter element. The dust and dirt can't make the quick turn and end up in the oil. My problem is I don't know the gap between the...

Air Cleaner Problems

Hi Brad,

I think that the down tube on your air cleaner has also been trimmed. There is no way that it would reach into the oil bath. :(

Thanks for trying.

Debris in Engine

I have added a photo of a piece of metal that I found in the engine. I thought that this metal may have come off the air cleaner. The lines on the background sheet of paper are 1/4" apart. Anyone have any idea where it came from? Tomorrow, I will try to estimate the length of the down tube. I will t...
