Re: How to check final drive fluid on JD450?
It can get moved if somebody wants to do that. I goofed.
The manual says JD450 crawler tractors and crawler loaders service manual and it’s 2 inches thick. Unfortunately there are no pictures in the entire lubrication section.

How to check final drive fluid on JD450?
I have a manual and it states how often to check and what fluid to use for the final drive but it doesn’t say how to check or fill. How do I do this? There are 2 plugs beside cap that appear to be different heights. Is the higher one the fill and the lower where you check?

Injection Pump Removal
Apparently, even though I was careful, I've torn the umbrella seals when reinstalling the injection pump. I now am getting fuel in the oil. If I'm simply pulling the pump off to put new umbrella seals on the shaft do I have to take the time to set the timing? What is the point of that if the shaft a...

Re: HLR Temp Gauge Sensor
Thanks for the info. I will look in the manual to see what it says as well. Of course I had previously looked in the transmission section and not the electrical section, oops.
Am I correct in that if I remove the sending unit, oil will start to come out so I will have to plug it quickly?

HLR Temp Gauge Sensor
Straight 450. The HLR temp gauge is not working and hasn’t since I bought it a few months ago. I checked and the wire goes from the sensor up to the plug behind the dash. I made sure the connection was tight at the sensor and it’s still not working. Have any of you installed a mechanical gauge or is...

Re: 1979 450c lost engine power
As a newbie to crawlers I just went through the same exact thing with my 450. The first thing I did was open the timing window on the side of the injection pump (I'm assuming process is same for your 450c) and there were a bunch of small black pieces of plastic like Stan is referring to. Was a real ...

Kinked Hydraulic Hard Line - Can I leave it be?
I've decided with this machine "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I was pushing over and moving a lot of jack pines yesterday and one popped up and hit this hard line and kinked it pretty good. I know ideally it should be replaced but I'm not going to unless there is good reason to. The boom seemed t...

Injection Pump Rebuilder Contact Info
Figured I would pass this info along since there doesn't seem to be a lot of options out there and some are very expensive. I delivered pump and kit to Hoover and my total fee for labor, rebuild kit including the check valve and permanent governor ring (no more plastic ring), new bushing and calibra...

Re: 450 Injection Pump Install - Shaft Seals
Sounds good, thanks. When installing these injection pumps, is it easier/better to have two people doing it or will we just get in each others way? I could have a friend help with getting the pump shafted/mounted if that's better. One handling the pump and the other keeping an eye on the shaft/seals...

450 Injection Pump Install - Shaft Seals
The manual states to use a special tool to compress the shaft seals when reinstalling the injection pump. Do you have any tips to the install if I don't have that tool?

Re: Injection pump timing
Ok I should be good then. Bolt is in the flywheel hole and governor ring mark is only about 1/32 past the cam mark.

Injection pump timing
I'm pulling the injection pump for rebuild. I got the governor ring timing mark close to the cam mark. Looked down the flywheel hole and could see an indentation in the flywheel. Slowly rotated until the smooth end of the bolt snugged into the indentation. 2 questions. When reading the manual it say...

Re: 450 Injection Pump Issues
I have bought a kit with the permanent fix to the ring that falls apart. I have also found a local diesel pump rebuild shop to do it for me.
