Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
I have been putting hours on the old 420. Moving shale, building roads and dragging logs. After a good carb cleaning it runs and idles great. I have decided to give it a bath and take it to the local Labor Day show ( feature this year is John Deere). I still have a non-functioning charging system, I...

Re: 420C track alignment
Thanks Lavoy. I pulled the carb and pulled both jets, checked the float and needle valve and cleaned. Now it idles nice with the idle screw out about 3/4" of a turn. I must have had some crud somewhere although I didn't notice anything significant when I had it apart. I truly appreciate all the help...

Re: 420C track alignment
Well I dropped the blade to get access to the idler adjustments. I doesn't make sense to me but i finally got the tracks centered on the idlers. I tried angling the idler in the direction of the overrun and that made it worse. Moving the adjustments so the idler angled toward the side that was runni...

420C track alignment
Asking for some advice on my 420 track alignment. After getting my barn find up and running I adjusted the track tension to achieve the 1&1/2" sag. I set all the tensioning nuts (inside and outside) to the same measurement from the spring tensioning lock nut. I seem to be running to the outside of t...

Re: Single or Double hydraulic system?
Browsing Marketplace I found a JD crawler for sale and one of the pictures were of the 4 spool fender mount valve, thought I would share.

Re: Seal PN for nut to reservoir - 420C
Just went through this as I am stacking a 4 spool valve for my 420C. JD part number is M1167T and is no longer available according to my dealer. Mine is in good shape but seems you could make one easy enough.

Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
Some pictures of the undercarriage. Pretty disgusting how dirt it is!! I haven't cleaned it up after dragging logs out of my swampy ground. https://ibb.co/SDh1DvTD] https://i.ibb.co/BHX7HsDH/C-13.jpg https://ibb.co/ZRv5B9hr] https://i.ibb.co/GfGyWmVD/C-14.jpg https://ibb.co/MDTWbMth] https://i.ibb.c...

Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
The story I got from the owner, which owned it since 1972 is as follows. He bought it in 72 and it was shot, all the way around. Between 73 and 74 he did the following. Rebuilt motor/main clutch, pins and bushings in the tracks, straightened rails, replaced all rollers (4 roller) and a new set of de...

Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
Canuck, I actually received with the purchase the right and left side panels for the battery area. The hood is in rough shape and the 1/4 locks are mostly missing so I haven't put the battery covers on yet. I have the back cushion also, both seat and back cushions are shot I will renew those. I am w...

Re: 420C hydraulic spool valve
Thanks to all for the knowledge and advice. I need to re-seal my current spool valve (leaking at the detent pin cap). Spool valves themself looks OK with no leakage. Dealer had in stock the seals (O-rings)for the detent cap. Since I have the spare valve I think I will go ahead and do the 4 spool sta...

Re: Barn find 420C getting it going
Lavoy, Thank you for the information. I just went to the John Deere dealer and found that they had (in stock) a lot of the seals I needed for my spool valve. The ones they did not have I can make (cork rings between segments). Thank you for the help with that also. John Deere also told me that I can...

420C hydraulic spool valve
Reaching out to all those with expertise on hydraulic systems on the 420C. I have purchased a 420C which came with 2 blades, an outside mount straight 6' and a hydraulic power angle inside mount 6' blade. The straight blade is currently on the crawler and I am investigating what I need to install th...
