Rather surprised by that. What I have to wonder then, why design it with 2 clutches instead of just a set of reversing gears? Almost seems like it is something they could have done on the transmission instead.

I don't believe that you actually need to get it snapped into forward to see the adjustment ring. With a block on the tractor clutch peddle, and the reverser in the neutral position, you should be able to rotate the entire clutch pack with a bar. On one of the 3 sides, you will find the small button...

Rear clutch, either remove the right foot rest plate to get from the top, or go at it from underneith. Front clutch figure out how to push the button in with a screwdriver, then while pushed in, you slip the adjustment ring up/down.

Here is a scan of the adjustment procedure on a 440. Let me know if you don't understand it or have any questions about it.
