Talked to my uncle a mechanic, and he said the you want the dirty oil to go to the outside of the filter. He reasons that they used to cut a filter apart to see what metal was in there to help see what was wrong with an engine. So if Bryce is correct, and the front is the return line, that must get ...

Reviving the 440 - Oil line routing

The long saga of the troubled reverser is nearing an end. Yesterday I was able to secure help in getting the heavy pieces into place, and even after wrestling with getting the reverser to seat for over 2 hours, the dozer is now 98% back together. No parts available on a Sunday around here, and appar...

Lavoy,
Rather surprised by that. What I have to wonder then, why design it with 2 clutches instead of just a set of reversing gears? Almost seems like it is something they could have done on the transmission instead.

Hi guys, just an update on my project: Got the center spider support manufactured, I had to modify it a little, but it is installed, my reverser is back together and appears to be working properly (on the bench). The dozer is all set to be re-assembled, but I have been too busy with work, and need t...

Tuney, I am the dude with the 1 1/2 year long reverser saga. Part of that is my being super busy, the other was a horrible dealer that screwed me. Through it all I have learned quite a bit about the 440 reverser, and if you can clean and take a pic of you pieces, I think I can tell you what broke. I...

I don't believe that you actually need to get it snapped into forward to see the adjustment ring. With a block on the tractor clutch peddle, and the reverser in the neutral position, you should be able to rotate the entire clutch pack with a bar. On one of the 3 sides, you will find the small button...

Rear clutch, either remove the right foot rest plate to get from the top, or go at it from underneith. Front clutch figure out how to push the button in with a screwdriver, then while pushed in, you slip the adjustment ring up/down.

Here is a scan of the adjustment procedure on a 440. Let me know if you don't understand it or have any questions about it.

my cousin runs a junk yard. 2 months ago scrap cars were going for $230/ton, last week they were $300/ton, and scrap hauled to the scrap yard was $320/ton. He said that it took a 50% hit and was down to $150/ton this week. There were some big scrap orders to be filled this month, and then the price ...
