First thing to do is go through the entire reverser clutch adjustment procedure. The manual is a bit of help in that. It does sound like you have the rear clutch fully engaged, and the front cluthc is not engaging at all. When you move that lever, it is supposed to dis-engages teh rear, and engage t...

OK here is what I do for trees with our 440. I dig under the front of the rootball, and then along the sides to cut the roots. Then it woks best if you can get to the other side of it, but sometimes you can get it from the front. With the roots cut on at least 3 sides, I dig as shallow as possible u...

I rented a JD 640 from a cousin last year when I had a huge amount of fill to level. He charged me $60/hr delivered, and including fuel. Worth it if you ask me. I would not rent out our JD 440, if you are not used to it, too easy to mess it up.

Chuck, kinda on hold at the moment. Just crunched for time. I am VP of a snowmobile club, and deal with all of the DNR paperwork, and groomer scheduling and operation. November / December was very hectic with personal and work. I got snagged on a new little problem, and since I was busy, I kinda dro...

Other Deere Forums?

I have been thinking about getting a loader backhoe for sometime and just happened upon a 1971 JD 400 for sale. Does anyone know of a forum similar to this one for that kind of tractor? Yes I am still waist deep in my 440 reverser, and likely should not take on another project, but I would like to d...

Good news, bad news. Got a delivery from mother Deere this afternoon. They had 85% of what I needed. I am going to have to live with 2 of the 3 old shafts, and I am going to have a machine shop fab a new spider.
More info as I get it next week.

Chuck, no problem telling people about my experience. It was Nortrax over in Escanaba. I'll never deal with them again for sure. As for your reverser, if you are getting any pieces out of it, you probably should take it apart. The parts are just not easy to come by anymore, and it is just going to g...

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes - I finally figured it out!!! So I took Lavory's advise, and I tightened up the linkage, not too tough since I have the reverser on the floor, and there is only 1 part. The groove was a bit wore, so I welded up the groove and cut it and filed it back open more back to speck. The ...

Chuck,
Been told that either Dexron II or III is a suitable substitute for Type A.

Take care of that reverser! I have a 440 tore down right now working on mine. Where abouts in Northern Michigan are you? I am in St. Iggy.
