Master Pin
I thought $55 bucks was nuts. For that kind of money I'll weld a chunk to the end of a standard pin dress it to shape on the grinder and cut an snap ring groove on the other end with the lathe. You could even cut the snap ring groove with a cutoff wheel in a pinch.I hate doing stuff like what I've ju...

Paint
I assume you are using JD branded paint. The few cans I have used
dried shiny.Even over a light grey primer it doesn't cover well.

430
Hello, I'm assuming this is the same 430 that had pictures posted on Yesterdays Tractors. If it is then my comments will be based on what I saw there.Snow pads look better than most you see.The barrel bung appears to be missing from the left front of the reverser. If it has been off for an extended pe...

Pins and bushings
From what I've seen, anytime the pins are welded into the rails means that they have been repinned and bushed many times before. If not then then someone turned both pins and bushings and the rails stretched enough to not retain the stock sizes.I think you will have a difficult time finding someone w...

440 p&bs
Berco P&B sets are fine, and my dealer agrees with Lavoy about Berco supplying Deere with track components. If I could get Berco sets again I'd jump at the chance.Other than Deere replacement parts the only thing my dealer has been able t get me were sets made in Korea. The pins were the correct size b...

Final drives
I just did a 430 5speed and the last thing in the case was the ring gear carrier.Preload and backlash got set beforehand. When Fred gets back to Vermont he may have a carrier.A lot of folks on here get parts from him as he parts out a lot of JD crawlers. To get the carrier in the case with everything ...

final drives
I believe that the 1010 carrier is rivetted. If you were referring to getting the carrier out then the finals have to come off again. The quills need to come off, then the carrier and gear can come out of the back of the case. If you don't have a service manual for your machine then i suggest strongly...

steering clutches
Just a guess but I don't think John Deere ever invisioned that 50 years after they were built that these old girls would still be used. There is definitely a serial number break on the 440 transmissions as iron popper points out and if you are locating used parts then that is something to keep in min...

Ring gear carrier would be broached with a splinecutter from one side to the other .No reason to under cut the center area and remove the splines there. If you find a ring gear carrier clean the spline area really good and look inside with a flashlight to make sure that the splines in the wear area a...

Filled up with water, just needs to be cleaned out.To be sure rust isn't going to cause problems down the road the trans should come apart. Th power shaft has two needle type roller bearings and the input shaft does as well.Rust on either shaft in these areas needs to be addressed and is difficult to...

440 clutch
Deere has a lot of the reverser parts like clutch disks, thrust bearings and needle bearings.I had one reverser that had eatin the differential cross shafts. The small shafts were $80 each and the large one was over $150.There are alot of parts in one that are Deere only and not cheap.Like Lavoy I wou...

Bob, If you only need 20 hours out of the machine short term, run it.From what I see from the bushing pictures they may be to far gone to turn now anyway. To repin and bush you really need access to a track press. The tracks need to come off to get them done and that is the worst of it,other than the ...

Welcome to the fun.As posted earlier the pins and bushings are in need of replacing, for sure. You may have a few hours use left in them and it's amazing the work these things can do in a few hours. The pads while worn alittle are not that bad.The rails are in my opinion based on the pictures warrant n...

Won't turn
More than likely you have fiber and steel discs stuck together by rust. With little use and high relative humidity the steels will rust and stick like glue to the fiber discs. This is a common issue with the dry clutch systems.Even when everything is adjusted right the clutch won't release, apply a li...

440 tracks
What a press is worth is like what a used crawler is worth. It depends on condition, what it needs in repair parts to do what you need and lastly how bad you want it.I never really wanted the track press that much but i have several machines of my own that needed track work.At the time my local Deere ...
