440 won't move

Guido, If there is evidence that water and rust are causing the locked up problem then you should look at a tear down. The gears can tolerate a little flash rust and operate but there are some small roller bearings in the idler gear that will ruin the pto shaft if rusty. If the other bearings are rust...

The price sounds fair for what you describe. You haven't told us what you intend to do with it though. If you part it out then definitely buy it.If you want to work it or restore then there are some things to check. You didn't say if it is a four or five speed.Since the 430 input shaft is longer than ...

Problem

Guido, The clutch and brake pedal should operate separately. The clutch pedal is keyed to a sleeve that rotates on the brake pedal shaft.A few years of dirt and rust and the sleeve bonds to the shaft. This is a common problem.Squirt something like PB blaster, liquid wrench or WD 40 at the housing end o...

440 won't move

Paul, If you replaced the main clutch and the machine won't move then you may have a drive line failure somewhere else.I do believe another site member had a similar problem and found that when the pedal was lifted to release the clutch that it didn't fully come up.One way to check this is to put th...

Bob, Years ago tractor manufacturers had a lot of different fuels to accomodate.Gasoline, kerosene, distillate and others. Some of the machines of the 30"s 40's and 50's would run on just about anything that was combustable.Start on gasoline and run on kerosene or distillate so there was on some machin...

Russ, If you are positive that the input shaft is properly connected then put the shifter in neutral and remove the top cover of the trans. With the ignition off engage the starter and see if the trans input shaft turns. If it does you could have a bad ring or pinion gear.Removal of the rear cover wi...

Steering clutches

If you have never done the steering clutches on one of these old girls before be aware of the two cap screws hidden under the machine on each side. These capscrews bolt the steering clutch housing to the final and are frequently overlooked. One big pry bar and the ears break off the steering clutch ho...

Reverser

Scott, All of the needle bearings and seals are available. The thrust washers both cupped(for the spider gears) and flat are available.I hope you don't find wear on the pins in the differential as the short one is $91.00 from Deere. The bronze shifting collar is availble and in my opinion at $218.00 a...

reverser shaft

Buddy, You really don"t need a reverser. From what I've seen ,large numbers of these were bypassed.I have a 440 loader that had its reverser gutted.I know because the shifter mechanism is still on the case.My guess is that if you pull the differential unit apart you will find even more damage. You are...

Reverser shaft

Buddyi, I have got an original input shaft that someone used as you plan. Wear on it shows that only about 3/4" was engaged in the coupling. It seems to me that you risk damaging the coupling or shaft if you really work the machine.I'm in the process now of rebuilding two reversers and the parts are...

wear limits

Joe, New sprockets are 1-3/4" wide at the base of the gullet. Each gullet has approximately 5/16" to 3/8" of thickness up to the tip of the tooth. As the sprocket width decreases at the wear points then there is less metal to carry the load and wear accelerates. If your sprockets have worn out a set o...

Joe, I don't know if your local Deere dealer can get Berco rollers for you. Lavoy would probably be your best bet.I am lucky in that I have an outstanding parts guy to deal with.Recently I had him look up a part and it came up obselete in the computer. He did an additional search and found the parts....

wear limits

Joe, Based on NOS parts the front idler is 19 1/4 " with a width of 1.800 across the vertical guide flanges. This part is as cast so a tape measure was used to obtain dimensions.Bottom roller is 7.187 "in diam with a flange thickness at the root of .375".These measurements are based on NOS parts. Be ...
