430 undercarraige

Bob, You can definitely build up your rollers with welding rod.I did this to my 40c twenty years ago.At that time I didn't have any way to machine the finished weldments so I ran them as welded.I used a mild steel rod and they have held up well. This is on a dozer so they don't carry as much weight a...

skidding logs

Derek, Three foot diameter logs and a healthy 440 will kill any 5/16 chain. A 3/8 grade 70 will stand up much better. If your skid distance is fairly level and short you might try chaining up to the bucket ,lift the log then skid in reverse.Dirty logs are a pain to saw and flat skidding gets a log lo...

440ic

Brian,
Nice score.Looks like someone put 40c sprockets on it at one time. That
is not surprising.Between their age and the abuse that these things have
seen it is amazing any of them are even around for us to fool with. Good
luck.JimAnderson

Missing teeth

David, If you don't have one already get a parts manual for your machine. Bill mentioned part numbers and that is a must when dealing with these old girls. When I go to the local JD dealer I have JD part number for him punch into the computer.Saves him and me time and lets him know I'm serious about ...

missing teeth

David, I agree with Don.If you were restoring a rare model that parts were not available for and it was for show only then a welded tooth might be acceptable. If you intend to work the machine then see if you can get a decent gear.If a welded tooth fails it may do even more damage to the rest of the ...

Roller Bore

Don,
Roller bore should be 2.184 inches.Odd number but I think it was
set up for 2.1875 OD bushing. That would give a .0035 press fit which
is right for that size range.JimAnderson

roller

Don, I can give you the bore diameter of the roller but it won't be for a couple of days.I will have to punch the bushing out of a used roller. How accurate of a measurement do you need? That may sound like a dumb question but the bushing is a press fit.If you plan on sleeving your current roller to ...

Fan

Jimmy,
That fan ain't right. You can try to straighten it or buy a used one.
A used fan shouldn't be to costly, but I sure wouldn't run it like it is.

rail dimensions and roller wear

Bill, I agree with you totally and maybe we may get that info through a web site like this. Thanks Lavoy and Randy! The Berco info came from Crawler Heaven's website. It covers 350 and newer machines but lucky for us some of the measurements are the same as the earlier machines. We can extrapolate the ...

rail height and roller wear limits

Bill, The total rail height for your rails should be 3.200 inches new.As I understand it the 350 rail the same height and Berco says 2.95 inches is 100 percent worn out. From what I have seen that should be close but for a dozer you could run less.A loader would be iffy but most of us would run what ...

Toplink on E-bay

Lavoy, I had that grill on my watch list.I showed it to my wife when the bid was around $500.00 and told her I wouldn't be suprised to see it go for over $700.00.Even pieces of 430 grills are high with tops going for over $200.00. I guess it's a sellers market with 430 grills. The toplink shocked me...

420 cutting out

Gary, If you have access to the parts manual for your 420 you can see the screen I am referring to in the parts breakdown. The manual calls this part an elbow strainer assembly. The part number is 67-523.You can't see this strainer without taking this fitting off the carb.If you have one thats clogged...

420 cutting out

Gary, I don't if your machine still has this screen but what I was refering to is at the carb. The fuel line comes down from the tank into a right angle fitting screwed into the carb body.Remove the line and unscrew the fitting and there should be an inline filter less than the diameter of a pencil i...
