Bow chainsaw

Hello all, From some posts on the forum I assume a lot of you heat with wood. My question is, do any of you run bows on your firewood saws or is it just a southern thing.I cut a lot of my wood out in the woods rather than drag the logs out and would be lost without my bows.Just thought I'd ask if an...

Decal

Ben,
My 440 loader has the same decal on the back of it's seat.It is just
much lower down.I always thought it was original but like you never have seen it another 440.Luck,JimAnderson

Wind energy

Scotty, I too, may have misunderstood your post. When you use the word new to describe what I know to be at least 30 year old technology,I hope you can understand.Your friend has new control technology available to him now that was only a dream back in the late 70's and early 80's. It took only 50 ye...

Wind generator

Amazing piece for self made.I hate to say this but from what I see it is the same vertical axis wind mill NASA LaRC tested in the early 80's. Efficient because is captures wind from any direction, but needs something to get it turning.Non self starting.Needs to have some way to brake the rotor to pre...

Lavoy, You are correct about crawler specific trans parts. As much as I push using the parts manuals I missed some of the info. With that said I still think that wheel tractor transmissions make good donors when the different model and serial breaks show cross use to crawlers.I usually use all of the ...

K, If you find significant internal gear damage don't waste time looking for 40c internals. Most old crawler transmissions will likely have the same damaged parts.Look instead for transmision internals from a wheel tractor. They tend not to be shuttle shifted unless equiped with a loader. They also ar...

You can get some idea of the problem just by pulling the shifter cover. You didn't say what gear your'e in when it pops out but I suspect second. These old crawlers get shifted between 2nd and reverse constantly and the operater doesnt wait for the machine to stop. This results in the grinding away o...

There is no original sheet metal and the dash is homemade. Not bad,
just saying.Counted the links on the left and this thing has been short tracked. Not worth the asking price in my area.Luck JimAnderson

Super Bowl?

If you listen to the security precautions for the Super Bowl you'd think there was a world summit.Eighty thousand people will be protect by national guard, hundreds of state troopers with snipers on the roof tops. The average Nascar race has over eighty thousand in the stands and you don't hear the h...

New original track components are not available from John Deere, except maybe pins and bushings. You can get new after market sealed rollers from Lavoy. He may have some NOS sprockets but if not, used or some one who has hoarded parts are what is out there. The 40c can be upgraded to 350c tracks but wil...

The machine if parted out is worth more than $500 for sure, but with E-bay it will probably go for much more than that.If parted out the new owner will probably do well but we all know somebody will buy it and expect to put it to work for a couple hundred bucks. It will definitely be a money if someon...

Rails

I agree with Gus,those rails should be replaced. With that said I would repair the link and put some hours on the machine.Nothing but use will show additional problems faster.A 440 with a loader is a lot heavier than one with a dozer setup.Decent used two bolt rails are not that plentiful but you can...

Broken rail

If these rails are used on a loader you may want to start looking for a replacement set of rails if you plan to use the machine a lot.If the part of the rail that the pads bolt to is thicker then what the roller runs on then expect more breaks. The 3.200 dimension on new rails is from the pad mount t...
