Re: 420 c loader crawler

I take you are talking main clutch. If that is the case and you didn't notice any problems in the main drive shaft splines then you have other issues.
Reverser gears or bearings. These machines are over fifty years old and they can break in so many ways. You will have to find out what broke.

Re: 440 loader quit moving

If your loader originally had a reverser and the internals were removed then it could be that the reverser input shaft was used.If it was then it is to short to last as it has less than a half inch of engagement in the coupling at the trans input.

Re: 440 loader quit moving

If your loader has a reverser then you may have an adjustment issue with the forward clutch in the reverser. If your 440 has no reverser then you will need to track down what broke. When you say that you can shift the trans with or without the clutch pedal is that with the engine running? Before assum...

Re: sprocket inserts

Back in the day,and I'm talking 60 years or better sprockets were routinely welded up.My dad did this with a hard face rod on his 420c 30 years ago. I did the same on my first JD crawler. The old mans crawler has just about used up a new set of pins and bushings but the sprockets are fine.It takes ti...

Re: Flywheel Issues 440 GMC

I'm with Lavoy on this one.I have seen many dump truck flywheels with surface cracks on the disk side. They were still useable but what you have there is in my opinion is scrap metal.

The shaft you need would be in any JD 430 or 440 tractor that did not come with a reverser or live PTO.

Re: 440 reducer

I just helped a poster here with this conversion. While a reverser is nice, if you decide to convert make sure you get the correct transmission coupler shaft.Do not use the input shaft from the reverser. It will work until heavy loads wipes out the spline. That shaft is to short to last .You will need ...

Re: 40c steering pressure plate adjustments frozen

I concur with the previous post.Ditch the pressure plate. For over 30 years I have dealt with rusted steels. They can be cleaned and reused. The biggest problem with the dry clutch system used on the 40c and newer is high humidity plus long unused times.Even new steels will lock up if not used on a reg...

Re: 420 steering clutch

First issue is that the clutch has not disengaged in years. When you pull on the steering clutch handle you hear a pop.The throw out balls are ramping out of their pockets. If totally stock then the throwout bearing is not where it needs to be.If you live in a region of the world where the relative hu...

Re: 1950 MC left track wont work!

The drive hub on the MC and early 40c are splined. If the axle is spinning inside the hub then the hub and shaft are toast.

Re: John Deere mc milky oil after valve job

If you are lucky it is a leaking head gasket.A new head gasket properly torqued with copper coat sealant is the first try.If that doesn't solve the problem then a replacement head may be in your future. To maybe make you feel better I have a really good running 430 engine that is dumping water in the...

Re: Jd 40c good price or not?

As per the previous post the 440 has 36 track links. With that much adjustment left I would definitely count links. If you end up with 35 then the machine has been short tracked. This is not uncommon and just means you will be dumping money into pins and bushings plus labor. The missing links will need ...

Re: 1958 420c reverser project

The correct input shaft can be taken from any 430 tractor that is not equipped with a reverser. The continuous power take off equipped prop shaft is different so you need to keep that in mind.Getting decent reverser components used seems to be difficult.I believe that is why so many have been bypasse...
