I just had a similar problem with my 440. It was the coil! Darn thing gave me every indication it was a fuel problem but I found that the coil started shorting out once it got hot.

I need a 56 tooth bull gear for a 1960 JD 440. I am located in MI near the Ohio border. I looking for something close to here if possible.

I am in the same boat as you now. My 440 has the same issue. While you have it apart check and see if the seal going to the clutches is bad. If there is oil on your clutches then it went out. further inspection of my tracks found that the bearings in the final appear to be going bad. Will the sprocket being lose make the track chain run off the rollers?

I have done finals on two machines and Lavoy is the cheapest and most helpful around. I would be real careful driving that mchine around with that heavy backhoe on there. If you get her bouncing you could crack a final. Nice machine though.
