Must be a common problem. I just checked mine and milky oil oozed up out of the fill plug. Where's the water get in?

Also, what's the oil type and capacity? (5-speed w/Reverser)

Any grease is better than no grease and certainly better than what was available "back in the day". :)

Thanks Tom! Even on the hottest day, I rarely see it run above ~180 so I doubt putting in a thermostat is going to make it run any cooler. :) Winter down here lasts for about 2-3 weeks split between December and January. Temps below freezing are pretty rare too. And if it were, I sure wouldn't be ou...

420C - Engine Questions

As I mentioned in another thread about building a FOPS, the head gasket blew and I couldn't see having it down that far and not check the valves. Well, good thing I did. I always though it was a pretty strong runner but apparently, it's been running on about 1 1/4 cylinders. One exhaust valve looked...

I never seen a side boom on a 420. What is its rated capacity? I don't have any documentation on the boom and there's nothing on the tag. I maxed out the load cable hydraulic wench with about 3500 pounds. I unloaded an old Toledo OBI punch-press with it and that's what it weighs. That was with the ...

Thanks for the pictures guys. I like the branch riser idea. I really need that but I have a boom and cables to contend with. When I'm working around the trees, I usually remove the boom. When it's in place and raised, the cables would interfere with that. Unless, perhaps, I make it "dog-bone" shape....

420C - Anyone have pictures of a simple FOPS?

The ole' pipe layer is down with a blown head gasket but I'm thinking of adding some simple caging or a FOPS. Lots of Mesquite trees around and I need something to protect my back and be able to have a little shade. And still be able to climb into it at my age. :) I use my 420 to maintain a dirt dri...

Wow! Great intentions but way too small to read. :(

Looking for fluid caps on 420C trans and final. Got all excited when I saw the topic then let-down city. Bummer!

Thanks for trying though.

What part of Texas? I'm about 25 miles SW of San Antonio. Lytle to be exact. Any of your tractors worth putting back to work rather than making parts? I'm looking for a small tractor that can drag a 4-5' shredder around. Maybe some light plowing.

Are you sure all the cover plates are in place? My 420 sits outside year-round through rain and humid summers in South Texas. It may sit for a couple of months or more between uses. I've never tied anything back or down. I guess I've been lucky but it fires up and goes to work on a moments notice.

I think KLittle hit the nail on the head. Check the governor. Mine just started bogging down under load and it has new everything. After hooking a wire to the throttle for a test, the thing couldn't be stopped. I haven't gotten into it yet but I'm pretty sure it's the governor. They operate similar ...

I never once had to lie about wanting a new toy so I don't understand the predicament. I once got a new lawn tractor and the wife got a new sewing room. I once got a new motorcycle and the wife got a new car. I once got a new car and the wife got a new motor home. If there's a fair trade, I don't se...
