Now with the generator, water pump, and radiator installed.
She starts easy and runs smooth.
Thanks for the parts Lavoy.
This is the last pic of the "Photo Journey". Thanks for watching.
Starter, battery, carb, governor, re-installed. We wanted to start it up before we glued more components on, such as the radiator, etc. Then the distributor should be easy right?... Nope. This is where I learned the previous overhaul was done WRONG! The internal timing was previously 180' out. I gue...
Big step was to mount the engine on the bell housing.
Two guys needed. One navigating the engine block onto the drive shaft, one flying the engine hoist altitude.
Looks good.
This is a pic of handy tools layed out on a truck hatch door.
Left to right: 420 guage, clutch disk centering tool (lopped of a scrapped drive shaft), bell housing mount bolts, with heads cut off, to align the engine as it is guided onto the bell housing.
The oil-pan is on with it's new gasket. The next fun step is to line up the engine and flywheel to attach the flywheel. The orientation pin has to line up with a blind hole on the flywheel. For me, the trick was to set the flywheel, with the hole at 12:00 on a jack-ramp. Need a light touch on the en...
A critical step is to set the internal timing of the engine. The crankshaft gear is aligned with the camshaft gear by mating the gears so the marks align. Then after the pistons are installed and everything torqued correctly, the oil pump is reinstalled so its distributor shaft is properly aligned t...
This is the objective of the whole exercise! The new connecting-rod to crankshaft bearings being installed. They snap right in. Here is the cap half. Gotta keep it clean, no contamination allowed between the bearing and the cap surface. This is a rare beast indeed, the crankshaft journal was turned ...
I got every part I needed from Lavoy. Fast turnaround too. Thanks Lavoy. New pistons and new rings. We mounted the piston to connecting rod, then clamped the rod in a vice to hold the piston steady. The pics below describe placing rings on a piston. Sorry for the background clutter on some of the im...
Update. Lavoy had everything except the main crank bearings. He actually found the 0.040 undersized rod bearings. But the main crank bearings were undamaged, so I'm gonna just stick them back in. Then next two weeks, I'll be scrubbing parts, etc. I expect I'll have everything by mid-September and wi...
The crank itself is undamaged. I can re-use (don't wanna) the main bearings, but not the rod bearings. The replacement rod bearings need to be for an 0.040 inch undersized journal on the already-machined-once crank. I'm still looking for them. Got some possibilities in the works. One expensive optio...
The bad news is that Lavoy informs me that the bearings for this turned-down crank are not available anymore.
Thinking about this.
Is it terminal?
Will I have to bury a 3 ton crawler because I can't find a 6 ounce part?
Stay tuned.
