The steering shaft is from a Farmall F-14 however looking at the brake levers I see pipes added to them to give some extra height. This indicates that it is an f-12 the F-14 had the angled steering shaft and longer brake handles, both to improve operator comfort. I removed the farm added pipes from ...

It also helps to leave the track pad on the link and remove the one on the next link, doing this still alows acsess to the pin and the pad holds both sides of the link to keep it from trying to spread when you hit it. This problem has gotten me on more than one ocasion, heat can also be required and...

No idea on the engine, but with out a belly pan on it they'd be looking for another one pretty soon if they were running in the woods a whole lot. Come to think of it I dont think I'd want to run a crawler in a field with out a belly pan, I tend to get a little nervous about that sort of thing. Kind...

I used to plow snow with my 440 but it never seemed to know if I was trying to plow snow or excavate a new driveway. It would just merrily chug along, pushing gravel into the lawn and skimming off the top layer of soil. Thats half the fun, a crawler loader on a 440 really dose a good job at that al...

Glad to hear you got it straightened out, I dont know if it matters on these old crawlers but as a rule on new ones a double flange roller should never be put 1st after the sprocket. The double flange can interfere with the sprocket, I know for a fact that this is the case on a 700H, when the track ...

As said there is no cheap crawler, also no how much time you spend inspecting one there will always be something that was missed. When I bought my 440 I knew I was going to have the engine apart and at least one steering clutch before it would be useable. 1000 dollars latter and alot of time I now h...

Don't the directions always say " Some assembly required " or in our case some disassembly required. You're right about that, I can only think of 2 things that I've brought home that didnt require disassebaly, and both of them had a 5 digit price tag  I think I'll spend my time in the ...

I've never run lead substitute in any of my old tractors, when i got my first I asked my grandfather and he told me not to wory about it for what I was going to be doing. As Lavoy said if you're running thousands of hours a year you may need to do a valve job a little bit sooner thats all. In fact I...

310D's are awesome. They sure are, They're the last backhoe deere built that didnt have a computer controlled engine. Not saying I wouldnt take a 410G but at least with the d series theres no computers to give trouble. The only thing I wish mine had would be the extendable dipper. I get by alright ...

Sure is fun to be able to do this stuff myself. I figure by the time I get the road in and the gravel pad down the 440 will have paid for itself. My biggest problem is getting away from work long enough to get over there and get something done, seems like I'm always working over time. Not that I'm c...

440 building a road
Its been a while getting to this point but I am finally hauling gravel and building the road to the site I plan to build on. About 3 weeks ago I had the 310D trailerd over and cleared out all the tree stumps in the area I plan to put the house and widened out the road quite a bit. All the rock made ...

If you look at the pads from the side you'll see that on the grouser end the pad curves down. this meshes under the up curved part on the back when thet pads are flat on the ground. If the pads are on the other way up curve on the back will pull dirt into the track as they hit the ground and iff you...

Welcom to the BB, Not sure on the parts lavoy is where I turn for my 440, however I do have some experiance with the alternator conversion. Now I dont normally convert my equipment because I like things original but on the 440 I was more concerned with having a functional charging system and it was ...
