Hooked up the chain, put the old girl in first, and just walked the car out dragging a brush pile along with it. It is not about the horsepower..... :) Yup, I would agree with that. I have pulled my Class 6 grain truck out of a mud bog with my 2010 crawler (approx. 50 HP). The grain truck is 26,000...

I made hard cider for the first time this year. So did everyone else, it seems like! We had such a huge apple crop there was nothing else to do with them. From my dad's junk pile I got a 30 gallon plastic barrel. (Most people use a 5 gallon pail, I tend to be pretty industrious!) Fill that up with w...

Glad you did not let them "fix" the head gasket. Very common mis-diagnosis in cars. Why people don't check the simple stuff with an IR temp gun is beyond me. Does it have an automatic transmission? Leaking cooler in the radiator can be a source of oil in the water. I had a 2.3 once (single plug), th...

Assuming the tank is aluminum and one piece, try removing the fuel line and pouring lacquer thinner in there. That is nasty stuff. If it's a 2-piece tank with a gasket, I wouldn't leave it in more than 5 minutes.

Northeast doesn't get that cold, but it's pretty wild. Between Saturday morning and Monday morning we went from -15 to 55. Now it is just about back to 0 again. At least it got warm long enough for everybody to un-freeze their water pipes!

It's called Old Construction Yellow. Your John Deere dealer has it in rattle cans or gallon cans. I'd go that route, even though their stuff is pretty thin, because it seems to be a very difficult color for others to match correctly.

If you have a winch or PTO it can help you narrow it down. Pull some cable out and engage the winch or engage the PTO and watch the shaft. If they continue to rotate after the crawler stops moving, the transmission is still turning so the steering clutches must be slipping. If everything stops, it's...

That's a serious loader. The only reason that poor crawler doesn't snap in half is because the counterweight is integral with the loader frame, pretty nice design.

I appreciate all the efforts you go to to keep parts available.

Original parts can be used as a pattern in many cases (used to work in a foundry).

Beautiful machine. I agree with trying to make it run first, even if it needs a motor job eventually, you can at least free everything up and get the engine hot and flush out all the sludge and condensation and crap. It takes 5W20 oil. I'd change it after the first time you get it up to temperature,...

Need a new float too, apparently even brass starts to age after half a century. Nearly set my machine on fire when it first started leaking! Have to shut the fuel off and let it run dry when I park it. For the overheating issue, first I'd make sure it was full of coolant (yes really, with the engine...

My blade is also slow this way, however, it completely stopped working at one point and I realized the system was full of air. It always showed a little low on hydraulic oil and I ignored it, apparently the level got low enough for air to get pumped into the cylinders, displacing some oil so it did ...

Aluminum expands faster than iron so try pliers while the engine is still hot from running.
