Tom on here sent me a bearing cross reference once if you still want it.
Last year I posted where to find clutch bands, but they are expensive and want the cores back if you have any.

Re: 40c Ignition problems
I have read a page on the Internet that accuses condenser manufacturers of not making a good connection to the rolled up foil inside when sealing up the ends of the can. If you have an ohmmeter it may have a capacitance test function. This can be used to check condensers before you waste your time w...

Re: Series One 420 Color Scheme
The early 420's were very similar to the model 40 from what I can see. My guess is they didn't do a complete retool going from 40 to 420, it was more of a transition.

Re: JD 420 Hydraulic Fitting Sizes
I believe the pressure line from the camshaft driven pump on the front of the engine to the valve body is a 1/2" flared pipe. If you make one, it needs to be double flare or it will leak. The suction pipe used compression fittings with rubber seals. I'm not sure if those compression fittings can be ...

Re: gearmatic winch master control
No, brake is self-applying, it only disengages when spooling out. Lavoy I think what you are saying is the brake grabs in one direction but not the other? It seemed to winch really hard when using it without the controller and a stuck clutch, but that may have been from the excessive amount of rust...

Re: gearmatic winch master control
When you apply the clutch, is the winch supposed to reel in with the brake applied? I was under the impression that the master control had some gimmick for relieving pressure on the brake at the same time that the clutch was engaged, but after taking it apart they seem to be completely independent.

Re: Gearmatic 8a clutch bands
The problem I had was my primary (narrow) band was missing, so a re-line was out. I did find replacement relined bands. The new material was gray and smooth without any inclusions and looked like it was formed right on the band, but it could be bonded, I don't know. Champion Technologies does clutch...

Re: 40/420 head
Same happened to me, just stopped being able to start it one day. Machine shop put new valve seat inserts in.
40 and older didn't have a water pump and were prone to overheating, but I didn't think cracked heads were common on a 420.

Thanks guys, I couldn't find such a thing before but the John Deere part number for a 35 pound container of corn head grease is AH80490.

Re: Roller grease and guns
Where can I get corn head grease or an equivalent in gallon or pail size containers?
I have an Alemite 6521 grease pump that looks like it would hold about 3 gallons. It was given to me with what looks like 000 or 00 in it, but I have exhausted the supply.

Re: Gearmatic 8a vs 19 parts
Alright, thanks Lavoy. I guess I will try contacting the people making bands for the 19 and ask about the 8a.
If anyone has a direction to point me in for getting a new or used primary clutch band that would be great. (The secondary band looks like it might be in there in need of a new lining.)

Gearmatic 8a clutch bands
Can anyone confirm whether the Gearmatic 19 clutch bands are a direct fit for the 8a? I see suggestions of this on the interweb, but nothing concrete.

I was able to start it off with a small punch to one end, then get a screwdriver under it to pry it off. Keep a pair of needle nose pliers on it for when it tries to take off.

Re: Seafoam in Hydraulic System?
The oil has to be changed every year, trying to leave it in there just does not work. Deere actually wanted it changed every spring and fall. I also replaced my drain plug with an elbow and ball valve with the handle cut off. Now I can drop a socket down there with a long extension (to the nut on th...
