Re: reverser oil flow question

It's almost like 2 things going wrong.... I agree there may be 2 problems happening in conjunction with each other. I think I'd try adding shims to the pressure regulator, to start. You are saying the transmission test port pressure is "90 -160" and the books says a more steady "170 -180". I have t...

Re: reverser oil flow question

Paul, Thanks for taking the time to have this discussion with me. It’s good to have someone to talk with that has knowledge about these reversers. You made a pump gasket. Then I read you bought a JD one. Yes....When I discovered that the leak between the front transmission cover and the transmission...

Re: reverser oil flow question

You said previously about flow and I forgot about it until I reread the thread: When I had the metal supply lines off of the transmission case I turned the engine over with the starter to check the oil flow coming from the pump. It took a couple of revolutions of the engine to send oil out of the p...

Re: reverser oil flow question

The clutch lube valve should have little to do with flow through the cooler. If the valve is open with high flow, then the pressure would be near zero other than any residual backpressure. With no flow, it's position is not relevant. With the cooler bypass valve stuck open, there still should be a ...

Re: reverser oil flow question

re-reading thread. I see you tested flow already... Paul, I didn’t check the flow at the cooler…..but I will. What will this tell us? The first thing I did was take the pressure regulator valve out. There was no binding and the valve was clean. I Left the valve out, screwed the cap back on and star...

Re: reverser oil flow question

Thanks Stan, I welcome any input. There are a lot of swirlers in my head right now. I'm curious if the pump output is enough. Chunks of silicone inside pump passages, out of place gasket blocking part of a passage? A couple of years ago, trying to fix this problem, I bought a new pump front cover ga...

Re: reverser oil flow question

I think that the clutch lube bypass valve may be the problem here. If the clutch lube valve was stuck in the up (bypass) position or the spring was broken the oil would vent straight into the case and no pressure would be present at the cooler return line. The pressure would be 0 and there would min...

Re: reverser oil flow question

The pressure test at the cooler was telling, but I’m not sure what it’s telling. I have an idea where the problem might be but I’m not saying anything yet. I hope for some unbiased input from someone. Inlet line pressure=60 psi. Return line pressure=0 psi Pressure check point=90-160 psi to start and...

Re: reverser oil flow question

One other thing, has the trans oil pickup screen (filter) ever been inspected? Perhaps it is collapsing under vacuum from the pump? Psprague, the screen has been out at least 3 times. There was never any noticeable derbies, other than a few yellow paint flakes. It was removed and cleaned the first ...

Re: reverser oil flow question

Thanks psprague for spending the time to look over the diagram. Do you think there might be a small crack or hole or un-torqued bolt in something and the change in viscosity of the oil or change in a casting's temp causes it leak internally and it to stop shifting? I'm just wildly speculating over m...

Re: reverser oil flow question

Over the weekend I removed the transmission top cover to take a look at the valves again. I pulled the accumulator housing with the bypass valve, pilot valve, accumulator valve and shift valve off of the oil manifold. After carefully disassembling and inspecting every restrictor, valve and spring I ...

Re: reverser oil flow question

When I got home from work last night I decided to try back flush the system as Amos suggested. I removed the bolt from the needle valve hole and hooked the air hose to the pressure check point. I left the needle valve access plug out of the case and put a screen wire strainer, from my wife’s kitchen...

Re: reverser oil flow question

I pulled the needle valve out again last evening and screwed a bolt with the same thread size in the hole. This eliminated the “needle” part and plugged the hole so that it wouldn’t let the pressure just drain to the case. I thought maybe that might push anything on through and out to the case. It m...

Re: reverser oil flow question

I removed the needle valve this weekend and started the machine hoping that the oil flow would push out anything that might be in the passage. I let it run for 3 or 4 minutes with the needle valve removed and the access plug in place. While it was running I shifted the reverser several times in all ...

Re: reverser oil flow question

A friend and I have studied the tech manual trying to figure out the oil flow and where a piece of gasket material would cause a problem. We came up with a theory that a small piece of material (think a crescent moon shape) would flow through the oil pressure regulating valve, oil cooler bypass valv...
