Re: Transmissions 256 & 396

I didn't realize that there was a difference. I do have the proper rails.. just they are buried in 3 ft of snow. I did mod things to get everything to fit.. and now I'm pretty sure the same will be true mounting the engine.. oh well. such is the fun of playing with 60 year old iron...

Transmissions 256 & 396

I'm not really asking a question here, but rather something I ran into while rebuilding my 440. Being that I have 3 machines, 2 later with transmission casting # 396 and one early with # 256, I decided to use the later version 5spd because of having extra parts (if need be) , but also, it had bigger...

Re: My 1st Crawler - 440

Sorry, my great uncle's garage has been gone a very long time. He closed it when I was a kid. Then he sold the property and the station was boarded up before he sold it. It had been well picked over just before he closed it. It's too bad really. but such is progress.. I guess...

Re: My 1st Crawler - 440

Very nice job on truck!! When you get the 440 done, I am sure it will be a definite show stopper!! Good luck!! Thanks.. ya.. the truck turned out great.. enjoy every minute I drive it. The 440 on the other hand is turning out to be just as nice.. too bad I want to use it on my farm. The very least,...

Re: My 1st Crawler - 440

The restoration is going along real good. Many of the major pieces have been sand blasted and painted. After getting the 1st of several parts orders I'll need to resurrect the little Deere from Lavoy, I have began to put the machine back together. Many Many thanks to Lavoy who has been there to help...

Re: Decision time.

I hear ya.. I've restored quite a few vehicles over the years.. and what I've done is progressively buy parts over the course of a year before tackling it. That way you spread the cost over a period of time... not to mention you are then able to probably finish certain sections because you have all ...

Re: 440 trans quill/bearing retainer

I really appreciate your feedback Lavoy... it can be a daunting task trying to figure out what was what with 60 year old iron. All 3 of mine have many farmervations and or bush fixes, though I'm undeterred by it and will keep forging ahead...

Re: 440 trans quill/bearing retainer

I remember when I 1st posted a pic of the machine, yourself (Lavoy) pointed out that it had a 1010 undercarriage. So I have kept that in mind as work progresses. That being said, the part number on the quill is T11581... and it doesn't appear in the 440 parts catalog. So I assume it's more 1010 piec...

440 trans quill/bearing retainer

Firstly, it's nice having 3 machines to pick from to build 1. But, it's made more difficult when one of those machines is above the 448000 serial and the other 2 below.. Case n point, while disassembling the above serial, the quill that goes on the side of trans had 1 with the center stub that the r...
