I'm going to check for voltage at the side of the dist terminal when the cap is on to see if it ever goes to 0 or if it stays at -6 or if it stays at 0. That'll tell me what the points are doing inside.

I ordered a new cap from Lavoy last night. They didn't have anything in the local farm stores. Will try this next and if that doesn't work I'll take the plate out and spray some air in there to dry out any moisture.

To see if moisture is your problem, remove the distributor cap and the plate the points sit on. Below that is the centrifugal advance mechanism. Ended up it was a gas not diesel. the radiator was crap. it did turn over when jumped. the clutch felt like it wasn't there, I don't know if that means it's bad or if it is hydraulic or what. gas tank was off.
