Hi, I presume you're talking 420 style here. Mine was just a short piece of steel exhaust pipe with a flange welded on in the middle. When it rusted off just under the flange - even with the top of the cast iron manifold - I used a chisel and removed the remaining piece of pipe that was stuck down i...

Hi, What? Can't weld with chimpunk tails?? I have ten cats on our farm. Well, make that twelve cats now. We had nine until our oldest daughter had us cat-sit hers - open ended timeframe, of course - and it turns out she didn't get her fixed. Now we have twelve as of four weeks ago! :P We have ...

Hi, Quite often, a really tightened track is an attempted quick fix for a really worn out undercarriage. These rails look to be well past fully worn from what I can see in the photos. What I can't see is the condition of the rollers. With the rock guards on, it's nearly impossible to see the rollers...

Hi, I have had only one JD350, but it was a very decent machine for what I needed it to do - personal projects around the place. Mine was a 1966 and did not have a reverser, so I didn't have the loose reverser problem. :P The lack of a reverser didn't bother me much as 2nd and R are the same ratio (...

Hi, Thanks for the lovely photos! They'll be a big help for lots of folks, I'm sure. I've looked at a dozen 350's down here in NC in the past year, and they've all had several of these same issues. That explains why I haven't bought one yet. However, I know that there's a nice one out there. All I h...

Hi, Sounds to me like he's describing the high section of the snow pad grousers. They alternate like his description.... I have the snow pads on my 420c and they work great in snow and mud, but not so great on ice. To correct this, ice caulks were added to each pad. These are conical headed bolts th...

Hi, Well, nothing wierd, anyway. The engine is out and apart. Number 1 rod bearing was worn to the point that it was about to spin, but it *was* still there - unlike number 2! Someone forgot to check the oil one day, I suppose, and killed the poor little thing. Such a shame, really. The crank is che...

Hi, Ah, yes. You are the proud owner of a 'Project'! You're cutting your tractor restoration teeth on a crawler/loader? Hoo Boy! I will say that tractors aren't like cars, and crawlers aren't like tractors, and crawler/loaders are even *more* fun, fun fun! ;) Keep in mind, that everything on that ol...

Hi, Yes, that must be a BO Lindemann. They are fairly rare, but there's still quite a few here and there. I always wanted one myself. :) My uncle had a GPO Lindemann. It sat next to one of the few remaining Model C wheel tractors in the showroom area of our Pine Plains, NY JD dealership back in the ...

Hi, I think the starting point would be a 420c 5-roller with a 62 blade. The 430 is pretty much the exact same thing - only the dashboard and tin changed from the series-III 420's. The 440 is a different beast. Deere kept upgrading that one until 1962, and this is where the diesel option began. If i...

Hi, A blade from an older model won't directly fit onto a 440. The crossbars are different. They are square on the older machines and round on the 440's and larger diameter if I recall. As far as *making* a 62 fit in place of a 63, perhaps someone else has experience to relate. I once looked into wh...

Hi, The stripe is not paint. It's ink. Deere screenprinted the stripes and markings, and so the color is much more prone to light fading than yellow paint would have been. Of course, they did it that way as it's much faster to screenprint on a stripe then to paint it on in the factory. One does not ...

Hi, The problem is that the steering clutch packs are made up of interspaced steel and fiber discs. The steel discs will rust. The fiber ones will absorb moisture from the air and swell up. There's not much space for any swelling in there, so if they do then the thing will drive OK - just not steer....

Hi, Yes, a 450C is what I've been looking for, along with a 350C or D. Actually, I'd prefer the smaller 350 but a 450 would be OK too and 450's are a lot easier to find around here. Whatever I get, needs to have a 6-way PAT on it. I love dad's old 420c and she'll still do whatever job I ask her to d...
