Hi, That sounds like a good plan - riding around and taking pix of crawlers being used for farming. I haven't seen a crawler doing ag work in a long, long time. All I've seen is the usual dozer and loader applications. It'd make for a interesting addition to the site. :) I did use my 420c for a quic...

Yup, A bunch of ice skates is what you have when you get sideways, for sure. That's why mine has ice caulks, which are like spikes that replace the pad bolts for that little extra grip on ice. They don't have much use these days in NC, but they were quite worthwhile back up in the mountains of NY st...

Hi, Perhaps the answer is simpler than you might be thinking. If no one has the information you're looking for, then it's quite probable that no one would reply. I know that's the case for me. I've not had a 450, much less rebuilt the engine on one, so I have no idea what you need to do in regards t...

Hi, My 420c carb is a TSX 688, so maybe that '0' is really a '6'. I can easily see how a '6' might become a '0' either by a slight mis-hit when stamped or as crud builds up over time. ;) BTW, my 430w wheel tractor uses the exact same model carb. The 430w is a 1959 and the 420c is a 1958. Earlier 420...

Hi, That'd be a 450 'A', then. Deere didn't use a letter for the first series of anything, but presumed them to be 'A' when they upgraded to 'B'. so, for the 450 it goes: 450, 450B, 450C, etc. When looking for parts, just call it a 450, not a 450A, since there is no listing for a 450A anywhere. ;) S...

I have noticed that a lot of the fluid I put in the front cyl has gone into the base. This concerns me. it took about 20 minutes for the cyl to drain so I am hopeful it is only stuck rings. I will keep my fingers crossed. Dan Hi, Mine are crossed for you as well - that it has stuck rings and not cr...

Hi, Oh, dear. I hate to have to say it, but the 2-cyls have this tendency to stop with the #1 exhaust valve open. In my experience the water flows into the cylinder. When it freezes and expands, then the top of the piston breaks, the valve gets bent, along with the rocker arm, rocker arm shaft and p...

Hi, Sorry that I can't help with the problem at hand, but I'm nowhere near my stack of manuals today. :( However, I can answer the question 'why'. Deere produced the manuals for the service shop, not the end user. Think about the number of models a Deere shop would have to have manuals for 'in the d...

Hi, Yep. The carb inlet screen is plugged. I've had this happen several times over the years. It's odd how the tank can have all this very fine crap in it for years and never come out into the fuel stream. Yet run it dry one time and it all comes out to plug that filter screen. What's happening is t...

Hi, I just use my 420c when needed and don't ever think about the 'collector value' of it. It was my dad's, and I grew up with it around, and, well, it's still around. Last weekend, I managed to get my JD 4500 4WD tractor/loader stuck in the mud at the edge of the pond (front wheels caked with mud a...
