So What Happens To the Tooling?

Always wondered what happens when an equipment manufacturer like Deere ceases production on a model. Take the 420C, are the casting molds and tooling still sitting on a rack in some giant warehouse someplace with an inch of dust on them, or do they do a spare parts production run and then scrap ever...

Re: 450 Refurb

Sweet boring head for your mill. Mine came with a bunch of tooling, but I would love one of those along with a rotary table.

Re: Needing a new air compressor

I've done some screen printing, and totally agree that the HF unit is not up to that kind of duty cycle. We had a big industrial Quincy screw-type unit to power three M&R Challenger presses and a couple single color clam shells. That compressor ran for 2 shifts 5 days a week and one on Saturday for ...

Re: Needing a new air compressor

IR is not the company it used to be. I had an ancient 5hp Kellogg American, and when the pump died I figured I'd risk $175 and try one of the Harbor Freight pumps https://www.harborfreight.com/145-psi-5-hp-twin-cylinder-air-compressor-pump-67698.html. Still going strong 5 years later, and 15 cfm at ...

Re: Truck shopping, a shock to the system.

Trucks have become so expensive it's stupid. 8 years ago I bought a nice used Tundra with 120k on it for $10,000. That truck lasted me 6 years and then I got a company truck so I sold it. The cost of ownership was reasonable. This spring I decided I needed a full size truck to pull my equipment trai...

Re: What is the most useless tool you ever bought?

On the Dremel, the little abrasive wheels are useless. I have a Craftsman Dremel knock off, and was ready to chuck it. On a whim I bought a small carbide cutter for it and that was a game changer. I have used that thing more times than I can count, to the point where the motor is starting to go.

Re: What is the most useless tool you ever bought?

Porta power is by far my worst tool investment. I got it thinking it would be one of those tools that I'd find all kinds of ways to use it. However, in 10 years I've used it maybe twice, and both times it was arguably more trouble than it was worth. I think it would be a heck of a lot handier if I h...

Re: Commercial zero turn mowers

My brother had a Husqvarna from a big box store that gave him nothing but trouble. A couple years ago my 30 year old JD rider bit the dust so I went to a local mower shop that sells Hustler commercial equipment. The shop owner said that a few of his low budget landscapers customers run models from t...

Re: foley belsaw mill

Honestly cheapest route might be to source a dedicated power plant. I bet you could find an 80's vintage 2wd Chevy truck with a 305 or 350 mated to an SM465 manual trans, or an S-10 with a 4.3 v6 and a manual (I have one of those in my rock crawler buggy, great little motor that is completely bullet...

Re: foley belsaw mill

I spent a fair bit of time around one of those same mills growing up. My folks neighbor that had it ran it off his Farmall H when he first got it as well, but the H didn't quite have enough oomph for sawing larger wood or making real productivity. He ended up finding a beat up Farmall MD which worke...

Very sharp looking machine. Just curious though, did they come from the factory with the hydraulic lines painted like that?

Re: Angling 1010 Manually

Will these blades handle the stress of hooks on them like shown in the picture, or is the angle casting too fragile to handle much pulling/lifting with the blade?

Re: 440IC Wont run w/o choke 1/2 on

I've had problems with bad gas on several pieces of machinery that I don't use all the time, including my 40c. The gas now is just horrible. I took a chance and bought an inexpensive Harbor Freight ultrasonic cleaner when I had a 25% off coupon. It's been a great investment. I mix 50/50 simple green...

Re: 420C "Skidder"

I use a swedged cable, slides, and chain chokers that are for a 60hp sized Fransguard logging winch. Agreed, the chain chokers work great but for larger logs they still hang too low. I run 3 slides and and end hook. It’s pretty amazing what that little crawler will pull.

Re: 420C "Skidder"

I have a Carco C3 on my 40c. This winch seems to be pretty rare, I've only seen a couple of pictures of other ones on JDs. The manual I got from someone on here references installation on an Case crawler. Unlike the other winch options the Carco does not run off the PTO, it is driven straight off th...
