Weight of rear weight.

Hi
I have a 450() with a rake (ripper?) and a couple of ballast plates on the back end. Does anyone know how much those plates weigh?

Thanks
John

Re: 450() steering clutch slipping.

I looked at the adjustment. I made sure that there was throwout bearing free play. I was hoping there was some clever trick to tighten it without pulling everything. Replacing the clutches is a big job, but the dozer is still useful for the time being.

450() steering clutch slipping.

One of the steering clutches on my 450() slips at high load. Mostly when the clutch on the opposite side is declutched and pulling in lo/1st. The clutch needs to be replaced but is there anything I can do to get it to lock better for the time being. I suspect the answer is "no" but I thought I would...

Re: Ripper shank source?

As far as the keep/retainer go, I just cut a "t" with a long down leg out of 1/2" (or was the 3/8" or possibly even 7/16") steel plate. The down leg goes almost to the base of the box. The cross of the "t" is wide enough not to slip down. Just slide it in behind the ripper shank. I have only a coupl...

Re: rebuilding my 450 steering clutches and brake (pictures)

I noticed there was a pool of oil in bottom of the steering case. Is there a weep hole or a drain plug? I probably should check mine.

Those are great pictures. It looks like I may have to do the same job in a few years.

Re: Low track power

I am not the expert but I will write anyway. The pressure on mine will not jump to 200psi like yours does. That seems odd. It should be regulated to 150psi or so. I would make sure that the pressure relief valve is working right. Pull the spring and valve out and clean it. Also I would not leave the...

Re: Low track power

I just went through a lot of that. The pooling oil may not be leakage from the pressure fitting. If you look just below the 1/8in pipe fitting there is a vent on top of the transmission case. The pool of fluid you are seeing may be the result of internal splash coming up through the vent. Take a car...

Re: Poor power from a 450()

Good point of reference. I was not sure what to expect. It sounds like it might not be performing too bad.

Re: Poor power from a 450()

For some reason my reply from my "smart" phone did not get posted. I will try again. Thanks for all the help. Non-Turbo. The 15% grade is actually pretty steep. I went out and measured the slope at the specific spot it was stalling and it is more like 20% +. It is a chore to walk up. It is still blo...

Poor power from a 450()

I'm getting the problems sorted out on a recently purchased 450. I just put a new set of injectors in because of poor power. The injectors did help a lot but it still seems under powered. Example: It will climb a measured 15% grade in H (HLR), in second gear and at 1900rpm, WOT with no other load. N...

Stashing extra belts is a great idea. I am going to do that when the time comes to replace the belt.

Re: Fan belt on a 450()

For the record, neither. Sad thing is I just had the engine off for a clutch. I am new to the machine and did not think to look at the belt. Alternator just gave up and I was going to replace the belt at the same time. Not cracked and it looks about 30% left. Gonna leave it, use the link belt or a n...

Fan belt on a 450()

I have read a couple posts about replacing the fan belt. A real horror show for simple maintenance. Has anyone tried using a 5/8 link belt? If I have to go back and retension it a couple of times so be it. Heck I once used a nylon stocking on a car (not mine I swear) it worked for about 20 miles.

Re: HLR pressure gauge.

I have had bad experience with the oil tubes leaking and making a mess in a reasonably nice car. I am not bad with a electric sender running up to a gauge provided it is not in an area likely to get damaged. I am going to take a second look at it to see if there is room.

Re: HLR pressure gauge.

If that cover really is the same as a 55ga drum hole cover I can drill a hole in it, use an extender and mount an electronic sender below the HLR controls. I don't want to drill holes in the original cover. Call this Plan B Rev 2. I still wish there was a better pressure port.
