Re: 440 4 Sale

OK, while searching for info, starting from page 100 and working back, I came across the first post, by my neighbor, regarding the purchase of his 440IC. This is the dozer which is the subject of this thread. Kirk posted some great photos of his new purchase, and I can attest that it looks pretty mu...

Locate by Area

I wonder if there is a way to search for members nearby on this forum. Ie, a filter, similar to the one for members names?

Re: 440 4 Sale

I just spoke on the phone to the owner of this one, it's in Corinth, ME. Nothing wrong with it, he said, I've never met him. He's asking $4000. I'll be in Corinth in a couple days, and will try and take some pictures. It IS a Johnney Popper. (I think he's also selling the land that it's on, and I th...

Re: 440 4 Sale

This one's a gasser, "Johnney Popper", as I remember it had a "12 volt cap". It is pretty much covered with a tarp, so I haven't gotten a good look at it. I think the land it's on is also for sale! LOL I will be up there this week, so should be able to get more info, also photos.

Re: 12 Volt Cap

Some good info from you gurus! I had bought the 12 v cap a while back, as it seemed the thing to do. I had seen a 440 with a similar cap. At least t's easier to unhook the rear clip. LOL OK, I did put the original cap back on, and the engine ran well for a few minutes, till I shut it off. It was fir...

Re: 12 Volt Cap

Gonna try again, short and sweet! Why are the towers on a 12 volt distributor cap 90 degrees counterclockwise from those on a 6 volt cap? Also, when changing to a 12 volt cap, do you need to turn the distributor shaft (rotor) 90 degrees, or just the housing?

Re: 12 Volt Cap

I wrote another (long) paragraph and just about finished, when the computer started going nuts. Unresponsive, then adding unrelated pages, blocking JDcrawlers, then finally clearing out my reply. I wonder if anyone has had this problem? I am going to post this message to see if it goes thru, then wi...

12 Volt Cap

WHY is the 12 Volt Cap (on my 420) different from the 6 Volt Cap> As I've been running on a 12v battery, I decided to install a 12v cap. Rotated the distributer 90 degrees, and the engine fired right up...on Number 2 Cylinder! This Dozer has run faithfully for the last 4 or 5 (?) years on 6 v system...

Re: 1957 420C - Pressure in fuel tank

I know this thread is a year or so old, but a #75 or 78 battery has the terminals on the side, only. These are 12 v, neg ground, but have been working fine on my old 420C.

Spline Buildup

Paul, it's been a long time since I was a machinist, but I think a plating shop could build up the splined portion of the shaft. (Or Spider) May be cheaper to find another part. :(

Gearmatic 8A

I think someone posted some info on their homemade controller, using 2 brake master cylinders. My winch is beyond needing a controller, as it seems to be missing many parts. I have adapted a 2" receiver to mount on the towbar, so I could use my 8000# electric winch if I needed to. The winch is mount...

8A Winches

Paul is pretty knowledgeable about these winches! I remember the photos he posted of his 420C restoration. Unfortunately, they seem to have disappeared into the clouds! :-( Back to subject, I had previously written that, even missing parts and a controller, my winch was able to reel in if pulled out...
