Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Thanks for your responses guys. I've ordered new bearings - two: 6211 2rs np, and one 6210 2rs, to replace those that are currently exposed - my winch shows evidence of having been reworked/rebuilt at some recent point before my purchase, so I don't want to dig into the crown gear section at this ti...

Re: Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch
Well, It took more time to compose my last post than to disassemble the winch drum. Once the cable was off the drum, I started tapping on the drum with a ballpeen hammer to loosen things up, and the next thing I know, the drum was sliding off the inner bearing and off the main shaft. Spooky, way too...

Digging deaper into my Gearmatic 8a winch - includes pictures
Hi: I'm finally ready to dig further into my winch. I am having an issue with the winch winding in on its own when under load, causing me to think that my inner bearing(s) are failing. I have the spider off, brake band and clutch off, and am looking at the side of bearing number 30 on the schematic ...

Re: Steering brake making unusual noise
Went to my Photobucket site, and it appears that they retained a "free" service for those of us who use it minimally; they have tiered pricing for other user needs. Still couldn't link my old avatar, however. Not sure why. Paul

Re: Steering brake making unusual noise
Hi: Just ran across this posting which seems to have regained the photo links from Photobucket. Has this occurred site wide? I sure hope so, a lot of people put a lot of energy into sharing their work and pictures which I have found to be invaluable as I work through my machine's upgrades. Paul

Re: JD 350b reverser
Hi: My memory on this is quite dated, so take with a grain of salt. I'd suggest taking the accumulator apart, cleaning it, paying attention to the ports and the adjustments and go from there. The accumulator works as a shock absorber and its adjustment needs to be attended to periodically. Best wish...

Yep, I like the KISS method of maintenance too. If I'm in the area, I may dig into something a bit further, but if I have no reason to make more work for myself, I don't. Paul

Re: Now have a 78 JD350C
Stan: Congrats on your new purchase. I know you've been looking for a while. I broke ranks last fall and bought a 95xt Case skid steer with chains, belly weight, bucket with removable digging teeth, and forks. Compliments my 420 nicely. The crawler works really well in the woods, the skid steer not ...

Hi: PM notmeu, he built his winch from two and took them completely apart. He may have some insights to share. Good luck. Paul

Re: Ignition / distrubutor problems??
Over the years I've read a lot of good thoughts on this site. Taking these ideas into account, and as time and money allowed, I've replaced the wiring harness with a new one - complete with soldered and shrink wrapped connections. Then I either replaced or rebuilt the entire electrical system on my 4...

Re: Ignition / distrubutor problems??
Stan: I've been running 91octane, non-alcohol gas with good results. It keeps pretty well and doesn't have the corrosive elements like the alcohol blended 87 octane fuels, and it is readily available around here for only a small premium. Any thoughts? thanks. Paul

Re: Gearmatic 8a Winch/Controller Rebuild
Hi guys: Some thoughts. Be careful taking the clutch /brake housing cover off; it's cast iron and can crack. I used small wooden wedges, a rubber mallet, the jacking screws, and patience to get mine off the first time. I didn't unscrew the center bearing housing at that time. The cover eventually sl...
