What order??
I'm a bit new at dissasembly. Is there a "best order" to take a crawler apart? I don't want any damage from stupidity.   I'm talking literally all apart. Not the engine, it OK, but everything else. I have to replace the tranny case and work on the steering, also fix the rock guards...

Obvious question of the day??
My 420 is getting naked and I've been going over the parts. The steering clutch housing has a broken ear where one of the side plate attaches. A repair brace was put in from front to rear ear to carry the stress. It had a loader on it and was abused (broken tranny case too). Obvious question ...

track plate bolt pattern
Is there more than one 4 bolt pattern?? I have the 4 bolt street pads off of a 440 and my brother has a 1010. He wants to use his more as a restored to original and for display. Thus, he would like the steet pads and I'd like his cleats for a working tractor. He's 1000 miles away so I can't just loo...

Well, that was interesting......
I just got back from the junk yard. The 440 tracks were actually slightly less than 50% worn. No outside wear at all on the bushings and no snaky when dragged. :D But......they have 4 bolt street plates. :( I knew they weren't cleats, but I asked the guy if they were 2 bolt and he said yes. :...

420 to 440 questions
I'm really close to getting really dirty.  I'm trying to line up things so as to not tie up my shop floor to long. What I know for sure: Tranny case is broken (bought it that way), one roller is toast but the others seem very good, track pins and bushings are shot on the front side. Steer...

OK, one more question, or two?
I have a couple of posts going on the 420/440 interchange so this is one more. I wish I had a 440 book to look it up. Since this is a loader tractor, it probably had a reverser. IF.... it's still there, will it interchange? At what point on the drive train will parts fit?? Is the engine the s...

what are your plans for the street pads?? I'm not sure what I will do with them. I have a friend with snow pads on a loader tractor. I would like the snow pads but I'm not sure if he's will ing to trade. He would if I did the changing   I'll know a little more late next week when (and if)...

roller check
I have a post going on using 440 tracks, but it also just hit me that I haven't checked the rollers. Will the 440 rollers also interchange? Let's back up a bit. My tracks are still on and have around 110% wear. OK, is there any "easy way" to see if my rollers are still good?? Can I jack up a side an...

440 tracks
I have a 420, but I have located a set of 440 tracks. Will the sprockets match?? Are the pads the same, 2 bolt? The tracks have street pads and I would like to put my regular pads on it. The owner said "most" of the tractor was still there. Is there anything else that will interchange? I went throug...

Roadbuilder, Interesting post. The red rock mentioned is dead soft and it is along side some rotten basalt which adjoins some hard rock. I'm lucky that the basalt on my side of the canyon is soft and fractured. On the other side of the canyon, it is hard and requires blasting. This photo shows wha...

Almost made it. One dig out left and we get 1.75" of rain last night. It's too muddy back there to even think about it. I thought I'd be done with the hard part today. Very unusual to get that much rain in one shot at this time of the year. Must be global warming again. That's why it 55 degrees and ...

It is indeed loess. I am in SE WA. I am told the ash present here came from Crater Lake when it blew????? years ago. A lot of glacier deposits. When you drive on this stuff repeatedly, it turns to a very fine powder. This is the case in the hole where I go in and out. Durring wheat harvest, the truc...
