Re: John Deere 420c steering clutch adjustment

Mr Huffman. I’d try some blue lock tight. It may be that your threads are worn. I used some red lock tight on the opposite threaded shaft because it wanted to vibrate in and rub against the throw out tube causing drag. No problems now.
Good luck.

Re: John deere 420c winch....

Love my Gearmatic 8a winch. It’s been a challenge to maintain due to my ignorance, but it is a pulling machine. I’ve pulled 36” x 16’ maple logs up hill. Multiple long stems downhill, and helped get myself unstuck using it. A good pairing with my 420.

Re: Disasembly Weights and dimensions for Transport by Bushplane

Sounds like an interesting project. While doing the break down, replace worn bolts, nuts, missing washers, chase threads, lube where needed, check and replace bearings and seals if needed. Check steering clutches and brakes. Check undercarriage and make it solid. While you are close to resources, th...

Jim Anderson: Wishing you all the best. Happy Holidays. Every time I run my 420, I think of your helpful comments as I brought it to a better level of reliability. Fired it up yesterday; two cranks, and runs like a top. Steers and pushes well. I need to go back into my winch and adjust the clutch a ...

Re: stuck motor

I agree with Greg too. This engine is small, and can be removed relatively easily. When I’ve dealt with stuck engines, unless they are an easy unstick, the rings, cylinders, and bearings, etc, become suspect. By doing a tear down, these parts can be inspected and repaired/replaced giving confidence t...

Re: It's always something!

Bret, I bought a non running 420. I started by working on “issues” for a long time, patching things until another problem presented itself. Gradually, as money was available, I replaced or rebuilt all the electrics. The wiring harness was one of my first replacements. Lavoy sells them. They come tag...

I’ve felt your pain. Hope you figure it out, and it’s not too expensive to fix.

Re: Master pin removal

I think it depends on whether you have a “dimpled” press fit pin, or a headed with clip type pin. Maybe Lavoy can offer some insights.

Re: Master pin removal

When I had my 420 tracks re-pinned and bushed, I welded a length of 1/2” rebar to a 1’ length of scrap rod (drift) that fit the master pin hole in the master link. I had a friend hold the handle while I hit the drift. Worked for us, it gave me room to swing, somewhat, and kept fingers out of the sle...

Re: problems with winch on JD 420c

Hi: Search "gearmatic winch" on this site. a few of us have posted pictures as we worked through getting ours working. Be careful removing the side cover, it's cast iron and can break if too much leverage is used. It fits pretty tightly around the spool bearing. I used a bungie cord hooked into the ...

Re: JD 350 logging arch

I logged with one when younger. We would grind off the ridges, and then make sure to reposition the machine frequently while winching for better spooling in the future. It's a pain on a 350 since you have to clutch, re-gear, reposition, put in neutral, etc. but it saves cable, binding, and cable sli...
