Re: 6 way conversion questions

Such a shame that Photobucket stopped sharing; so many wonderfully useful posts with pictures lost.

Re: Almost got hurt BAD!

Used to carry a bag of sandbox sand in the truck cab to sprinkle on a slick deck. No salt so less corrosive. Made for better footing too. Paul

Re: Pressure plate setting bulletin, engine and steering clutch

On a few of my modified tools, I have a tape label describing what they were reworked to fit because it might be years before I need that configuration again, and with my memory... I still have a homemade puller from the late 60s that I used for valve lifters that are supposed to be removable with a...

Re: Pressure plate setting bulletin, engine and steering clutch

Just helped a friend adjust his steering clutch plate fingers. A thin 7/16" wrench is needed to adjust the bolt up and down to move the fingers. I found that grinding down a "yard sale" open end wrench worked well. The jam nut is 1/2" and a common open end wrench fits fine. Paul

Re: There is nothing like a young girl and...

Great picture and your daughter will always remember the event. My daughters both have driven the 420, and their various boy friends of the time loved playing on it too. I have some great pictures and memories of people from all over the world giving "driving the dozer " a try. I have to get a new p...

Re: Chainsaw vs Skidder (not good)

You know the phrase "there are old loggers and bold loggers, but no old, bold loggers?" I'd suggest you evaluate where you fit in the picture. You seem to have more than your fair share of misadventures. Take care. Paul

Beautiful restoration. Mine will never look as nice, but I can appreciate the time and effort that you put into yours. Really like your winch rebuild. If only mine had a spider as clean. :-) Enjoy. Paul

Re: No spark at plugs 1010 gases

Hi: I've read that an undersized starter cable "starves" the ignition system during starting; too much resistance. I replaced mine, on my 6v 420 system, with an "O" cable made from welding cable and soldered on ends. I know that Lavoy has commented on the cable sizes he recommends too. Good luck. Paul

Re: John Deere 420 C

My clutch/brake sleeve weren't a problem for me, but based on others expressed problems, a few years ago I hooked up my power washer and gave my brake/clutch shaft a good cleaning. As Lavoy has said in the past, water is a universal lubricant and gets into rusted parts best. I followed up with lith...

Re: maximum degree of climbing, assent, descent

I believe that as a starting point steeper roadside grades target a 1:2 rise to run, or about 26.5 degrees. 1:1 pitch is 45 degrees.
