I was lucky to have a good used one from a bunch of parts I bought from a guy one time so I didn't have to look any further. Lavoy may be able to help or maybe a good machinist could fix the old one.

I would pull the transmission cover and see if there is anything obvious. If not, I would suspect the propeller shaft that runs from the clutch to the transmission. According to my 40c parts manual, the M2361T is on the later 40c, serial 62264-up. Other part/casting numbers listed for this machine are AM3368T, M3687T, AM2132T and AM3225T. I think there should be a key to hold the clutch pedal in proper alignment to the shaft. Hard to maintain alignment with just the bolt. If the key is there, make sure it or the groove are not worn a lot.

I had a similar problem when I replaced the engine clutch on my 40c. Too much free play and clutch wouldn't completely disengage. Removed the engine, adjusted the clutch fingers with the JD tool and repaired wear on the throw-out bearing carrier and that solved my problem.
