Randy: I resent a pm, but but just in case, I asked you to send me your email address so I can send you an attached copy of the Gearmatic 8a/g winch manual. Gil shared a copy with me awhile ago, and I made a .pdf copy which I can send as an attachment. Paul

John: I was responding to the question of what to do to get by with an oil soaked brake band to save some money. I've used the heating process on 350s, 450s, and 440 skidder winches sucessfully - maybe I carried a lighter load, or maybe I got lucky, but I was happy with the results, and as you said,...

I've had good luck using a torch to bake/burn out the oil. My experience with solvents has not been good - the diluted oil soaks into the brake band and then resurfaces when in use causing it to slip. I methodically heat the brake material keeping the torch moving and use some discretion so as not t...

Just a thought based on some other experience - Can you epoxy your copper bushings in place rather than build with weld? The thickened epoxy (brass powder for less dielectric corrosion) has pretty good compressive strength, allows for alignment of the bushing and pins so that they are perpendicular ...

How thin can the vertical parts of the front idler get before they're too thin; how thin can the idler faces (the part that the chain rides on) get before they're too thin? I'm sure that an answer will be it depends on how rough it's used, and the soil conditions, but I'm trying to figure out if I n...

pad bolts

Another county heard from - We ran 450s and 350s on pretty rocky soils (ledge) often hung from the winch of a larger machine. Even with care, the bouncing was considerable, and we found that tracks either kept pads tight or seemed to need constant maintenance. In the field, we used bolts like John h...

A 350 has three cylinders; a 450 has four. That the dealer wouldn't clear this simple confuser up in its ad would concern me. They should have been clear - I wonder what else they don't know about this machine. JMHO. Paul

Thanks Paul. I looked at the photos I believe you posted about dismantling a 350. Very interesting. Someday I would like to tear mine down completely and restore it. You're about an hour away from me, maybe sometime I could stop by and pick your brain a little more. Wrong Paul. I did pull and reins...

Then we moved it back to the shop and the son cleaned the track frames once it was parked on blocking in the shed it stays in
Did you let him heat up the dirt to get it off, or just let him pick away at it cold as a reminder?

Don't forget that the cover needs to have a recess that matches the big (~3") drum bearing, and you'll need the fitting that directs the brake fluid from the winch contol into the inner slave through the cover. Paul
