Hi,
Won't hurt the battery. Might have hurt the regulator.

Re: 440IC Negative ground 6v
Hi,
The main thing is the generator would then power discharge the battery. The regulator would be putting too much current into the field coils. These are relay regulators, and the overcurrent thru the relay contacts is probably....bad.

Re: Oil pressure switch
Hi,
All that switch did is turn on the hour meter.
The gauge is mechanical and hooks to the base of the oil filter.

Hi,
Only part that matters as far as polarity goes is the generator. Have that backwards and it will discharge the battery until it quits.

Hi,
If I were doing a 12v conversion, I would change the ammeter for a voltmeter. Hook the voltmeter to the ignition side of the switch so it isn't on all the time.

Re: Alternator or Generator
Hi, If you don't swap the wires on the ammeter, it will still function, only backwards. It will read discharge when charging. This, because you reversed the system polarity. Not a big deal, really. I think the CCA will not matter with the battery as there is a fairly narrow range for the physical si...

Re: Alternator or Generator
Hi, I would use a side post battery, and whatever fits in the hole. Yes, starter has only the one cable. No solenoid on these they have a Bendix drive. One wire alternator goes to the starter where it hooks to the battery cable. Another wire from the starter post to the switch. From the switch to th...

Re: Nothing Good to Report
Hi, Good Grief! Yes, that most definitely sucks. When you hadn't been heard from for a while, I was kind of thinking you had an issue. But, these days that issue is presumed health related. Maybe even no longer breathing. We say in the rescue business: Don't sweat the small stuff. As long as you are...

Hi,
A machine shop can cut your old teeth off the sprockets leaving a hub to weld or bolt the new rim onto.

Re: 40c distributor
Hi, Yes, jumping is parallel. Like most diesel crawlers with their two batteries. You are adding currents. In series, you are adding voltages. So, series is one positive to the other negative and then you hook the load to the left over positive and negative terminals. Like flashlight cells. The batt...

Re: 40c distributor
Hi, No, the 12v charging system won't properly charge a 6+8v battery in series. It only goes to 14v and that is the nominal voltage for the 6+8 combination. You might get Float out of it - where the battery is not charging or discharging but just sitting there with enough voltage that the acid isn't...

Re: 40c distributor
Hi, I know places like Batteries Plus still have them. IH uses these. Maybe places like Tractor Supply as well. I haven't looked there. I use them for portable no-generator field radio operation. I series an 8 with a 6 to make a 14v battery. The radios are designed for use in a running vehicle so th...

Re: 40c distributor
Hi,
On the other hand, my 1950 M and 1958 420c both start right up on their original six volts. Unless a spider got in between the points. That happened once.
But ya gotta keep all the connections really good or else.

Re: 420C Sediment bowl
Hi, The rubber ring and cork gaskets come and go, back and forth, at the JD parts counter over the years. It is always a crap shoot as to what you are gonna get each time you need one..... ;) And, it is also a crap shoot if you need one or not every time the bowl is removed. I learned to keep spares...

Re: Wire Mesh Filter
Hi, Yes. There would be a library of manuals in the service shop. That is what the long binding stand was for, to make up the manual library. To work on my very late 420c, I need not only the 420 manual but also the M, 40 and 440 ones. The first two because they don't repeat unchanged information an...
