Brad, If the rain stops by the time I get home, I'll get those dimensions to you. Should be an easy job for a metal shop. Talk to you later.

foot rest
Brad, Unfortunately it sounds like all the small stuff is gone. :( As far as the curved shields go, if you have access to a sheet metal brake and a lolly column you should be able to fabricate one(or two). If you need the gage of the sheet metal I can get it of my machine. I already snapped the firs...

maybe another source
Brad, I know the feeling of getting distracted at the last minute and missing an auction. There is a guy in Buffalo NY that recently tore down a 440 to component level. :( I emailed him about some stuff he had left over. I can ask if he has any sheet metal he might have thought wasn't valuable enoug...

Glad to hear it!
Brad, I envy you for two things; 1.) you're able to break down your machine and start working on it and 2.) you have some great shots of the work in progress. How are you uploading your photos in your messages? I've spent the better part of an hour trying to compress my jpegs down to a point that th...

Can't upload pics at site
Ok...for those of us who are computer illiterate, how do you resize your photos small enough for the hosting service to accept them. I've shrunk mine to 600x663 and the file is still too large. :x any smaller and you'd have to put a micrscope up to the screen to see them. This is the first time I ha...

floor tin
Brad, Unfortunately you're a couple of days too late. A guy on ebay is parting out a 440 and had the 4 pieces of floor tin for auction.

solo operations
Don't kid yourself Little John, I have 6 kids running around this property! When I say solo it's because I NEED it that way for now. Once the tree is down and cut to fireplace length, then I turn the kids loose. The oldest is a girl so not much help there :( , but the other 5 are boys :D . T...

nothing but the shaft
You were right Lavoy, nothing but the shaft left in there. One more thing to fix when I get ready to tear it down.

dropping trees solo
One more thing I kind of glossed over was the "...attach some beefy rope as high on the tree as possible..." I don't like climbing that high in the trees to set the rope. What I've had good luck doing is using one of my kids starter fishing poles with a small lead weight, I'll cast over a limb about...

downing trees solo
Little John, As I stated, "...for a one man operation". That's usually how it goes around here. Just make sure the rope is long enough in case the weight brings the tree down all at once and you can't get to your other machine. Tough way to lose sheet metal, especially when you have to watch...

440 Reverser
The 440 I have has a shaft down by the clutch pedal but no linkage or connections of any kind hooked up to it. It doesn't look like there was a shifter installed either. Was the reverser housing and shaft installed on all 440's? I'm wondering if I in fact have a reverser or I'm looking at some sort ...

downing trees
What I've found works pretty well for downing tress is to attach some beefy rope as high on the tree as possible then to the crawler long enough to miss the crawler when it comes down. About halfway between crawler and tree I'll loop the rope around a sizable piece of cut tree for weight. Pull the c...

440 brake crank arm/lever rocker arm movement
I went to the John Deere Operators Manual (OMT73459) to see if I could adjust the steering clutches. When I opened the covers, it looks as if the lever rocker arm and the brake crank arm are locked together. The brake adjusting set screw really does nothing for the moment. I ended up backing...

CD Manuals
Lavoy, Thanks for the info. Brad will be sending me a CD soon. As I told him in my email, the 440 was in rough shape when I got it. The previous owner had put 2" angle over the hyd track adjusters to keep the tracks tight. I'm just a little nervous a rock between the sprocket and track could pop som...

440 ICD
I picked up a 440 crawler this past fall. Hope to get some pictures in here to show what I'll be dealing with. I've never had a dozer so the learning curve should be pretty high. Biggest problem is steering. It only steers to the right. Even that's starting to fade. Paid $2500 so I wasn't expecting ...
