Re: 1958 420c reverser project

Have you checked out the differential assembly? There are lots of small and expensive parts in there like needle bearings and special cupped thrust washers. The main cross shaft alone was $180.00 from Deere last I checked. The needle bearings and bolts are probably the only things in there not Deere s...

Re: 1958 420c reverser project

That 2 13/16" nut is the major pita when getting the rear clutches out.I have searched everywhere and it seems no one makes one.I guess that is the reason why all but one I have shows chisel marks where someone needed to get it off.I have cleaned them up and cut them down to 2 3/4".At least I have a...

Re: Acceptable Rail Height?

If you live in New Hampshire then you have a great source for parts. Most of the folks on the board from New England know Fred Kengetter. The last conversation I had with him this summer he said had lots of tracks. He's honest.has tons of parts and snow birds from Miami to Chester VT. each year.Send me...

Re: Acceptable Rail Height?

I posted the rail height and other specs. They can be found on the second page of the Faqs questions. These came off of NOS parts. I assume you know that 40C rails are only the same as later rails in pitch and pad bolt hole spacing. With all the questions about wear limits here lately, I am scatching ...

Re: Idler bracket crooked

Seth, Wecome to the world of antique crawlers.None of the issues you have discovered on your MC are unfamiliar to us that own even much newer units.Years of abuse and repairs done by the unknowing take their toll.Using a near 70 year old crawler to perform useful work comes at some cost. All of thes...

Re: Throttle spring

What you need is called a throttle control rod spring. The manuals you describe may be original reprints. They have the best information by far of any manuals out there but some of the reprints of the service manuals don't have the photo clarity of the originals. With that said I still would rather hav...

Re: JD MC Possible Steering Contamination

You will get a chance to check the upper final seals and bearings when you get it off.The seal material if original is close to sixty years old so it will just lose elasticity and leak.Just examine the bearing and cup closely and if they look good they can be reused. There may be some disagreement ab...

Re: JD MC Possible Steering Contamination

When you pull back on the steering clutch lever do you feel a slight pop when the clicking noise is heard? If you do then then the balls are ramping out of the pockets.Sometimes this chips the edge of the pockets. This condition is caused by inadjustment of the throwout bearing. The seal you point out ...

Re: JD MC Possible Steering Contamination

One of the things I forgot to mention is that once you get the clutch pack apart and new fibers to go in you should have the gage to set the finger height of the pressure plate.Lavoy has these at a reasonable price and the gage can help with the main clutch as well.Luck,JimAnderson

Re: JD MC Possible Steering Contamination

Hello, As stated the fibers once oiled are useless. The clicking noise is definitely an adjustment issue. The service manual is one of the most useful tools you can have.If you have the parts manual then the seal can be sourced from Deere.Keep in mind that the parts manual only gives you JDs part numb...

Re: Sprocket bolts

Very early on Deere used a tapered bolt to hold the sprocket on.They are similar to some modern trailer hub bolts. They then upgraded to dowels plus taper headed bolts. The final upgrade for the two cylinder machines were dowels, normal bolts and heavy washers. If the sorockets you have do not have a c...

Re: 420c undercarriage rollers

Original 420 rollers have a sleeve bearing on each side. The area inside the roller is much larger than the sleeve OD.If you cannot pull the sleeve then a special driver which keeps the bearing from falling into the center of the roller needs to be used. This can be made but unless you are restoring t...

Roger,
Glad the info was of help.I was leaning toward Surplus Center but sometimes Northern has just what is needed. One thing for sure, getting new
cylinders is easier and faster than rebuilding what you have.Luck,JimAnderson

Pallet forks

Paul, With a dozer blade and a good cutting edge the load is downward in undisturbed soil. The 62 blade is my guess is 500 hundred pounds not including the mounting frame. The cylinders are more than up to the challenge of lifting 1200 pounds. In all likelihood the diameter of them was selected more to...
